Half a Million to a Million Americans: Where Every Figure Comes From
You may have heard that Israeli newspapers are writing about half a million to a million Americans fighting on the ground in Iran. That is true, and the largest number in print came from an Israeli paper. This page lays out every half-million and million figure in circulation, who said it, and what it means for the size of the American army a ground war in Iran would take.
Evidence ratings: CONFIRMED that the Jerusalem Post published, on 30 August 2026, a column sizing an Iran ground war at "between 750 thousand and 1.5 million American troops," to be recruited through debt forgiveness. CONFIRMED that named military analysts on the right and left put the force needed to conquer or occupy Iran at 500,000 to 1.6 million. CONFIRMED that the White House, asked about a draft for this war, said it was "not part of the current plan right now" while keeping "options on the table."
Why the number matters
Iran has about 90 million people, more than three times Iraq's population, on nearly four times Iraq's land. The active-duty US Army has about 452,000 soldiers. If a ground war in Iran needs half a million to a million and a half troops, the United States cannot field them from today's volunteers. That is why every one of these numbers leads to the same place: a draft, meaning compulsory military service ordered by law, or some substitute for one. See Troop Math for the arithmetic and the forced draft law for the machinery Congress has built.
The Israeli newspaper's number: 750,000 to 1.5 million
The largest figure in print is in Israel's oldest English-language daily. AJ Jaff wrote in the Jerusalem Post on 30 August 2026:
"Estimates for a successful ground campaign against Iran's 31 provincial commands and its Mosaic Defense Doctrine run between 750 thousand and 1.5 million American troops."
He proposed filling the gap with "a federally administered debt-forgiveness enlistment program" for Americans aged 18 to 34 (Jerusalem Post). On X he added the timetable: "a ground invasion by Q3 2027," with "750,000 to 1,500,000 American soldiers (or mercenaries)" (AJ Signal on X, 15 September 2026). Full story: The Jerusalem Post Column.
The column spread because it said out loud what the rumor had said. Reza Nasri: "Israel's Jerusalem Post has published a proposal every American should read. ... A ground campaign would need somewhere between 750,000 and 1.5 million troops. The active Army has about 452,000." Armand Domalewski: "the jerusalem post has an op-ed advocating for the pentagon to recruit half a million americans to invade Iran by offering them debt forgiveness." That is the origin of "Israeli news" and "half a million to a million."
Every named figure
| Figure | Who, where, when | What it describes | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| 750,000 to 1.5 million US troops | AJ Jaff, Jerusalem Post, 30 Aug 2026 | Ground campaign against Iran's 31 provincial commands; recruit with debt relief | CONFIRMED |
| "as many as 1.6 million troops" | Brandan Buck, Cato Institute, via Common Dreams, 26 Mar 2026 | The 2003 Iraq invasion scaled to Iran's population | CONFIRMED |
| more than 600,000 | Buck, UnHerd / Cato, Mar 2026 | Occupation at Fallujah troop density | CONFIRMED |
| "a million soldiers properly organized, trained and equipped" | Col. Douglas Macgregor (ret.), X, 8 Apr 2026 | What victory over Iran would take | CONFIRMED |
| "possibly a million soldiers" | White House adviser David Sacks, June 2026, as paraphrased by Drop Site News | Invasion as a "suicide mission" | MODERATE (paraphrase) |
| "half a million US troops" | David Pyne, former Army staff officer, X, 18 Mar 2026 | "Even if Trump were to reinstate the draft ... and send half a million US troops to fight and die in a war being fought for Greater Israel, victory would remain unlikely" | CONFIRMED |
| 36 to 60 divisions | Policy Tensor, X, 18 Mar 2026 | Occupation models; "The US cannot occupy Iran even with a draft" | CONFIRMED |
| "500,000 troops and the return to the draft" | Malcolm Nance, X, 14 May 2019 | His estimate, answering a New York Times report of a 120,000-troop plan | CONFIRMED |
| "over a million American military 'boots on the ground'" | Lucy Riles, X, 13 Jul 2026 | "The draft would become a very sobering reality for American families" | MODERATE (cites unnamed experts) |
Rows marked MODERATE are summaries or rely on unnamed experts. Many anonymous posts in 2026 repeated figures of 500,000 to 1.5 million attributed to "Pentagon insiders"; this page relies only on named sources, and the named sources say the same thing.
The other side of the math: Iran's million
Iran has told the world how it would meet a ground invasion. Al Jazeera, citing Iran's Tasnim news agency on 26 March 2026: "More than one million fighters in Iran have been prepared for a ground battle with the US," a post seen more than 1.5 million times (Al Jazeera on X). Iran's "Sacrifice for Iran" mobilization campaign claims hundreds of thousands registered. Those are Iranian claims and Iranian fighters, not American ones, but they explain why American analysts reach for a million: an invader must outnumber the defender.
What the official plans say so far
The deployments and plans that officials have confirmed are smaller, and they are growing:
- 2019: the New York Times reported a Pentagon plan "that envisions sending as many as 120,000 troops to the Middle East should Iran attack American forces or accelerate work on nuclear weapons."
- March 2026: the Wall Street Journal reported the Pentagon was considering "up to 10,000 additional ground troops"; CBS reported "detailed preparations for deploying U.S. ground forces into Iran"; the Washington Post reported preparations for "weeks of ground operations in Iran" (Pentagon Ground Plans 2026).
- September 2026: about 50,000 US troops in the region, deployments extended into 2027 (The Buildup).
Every analyst above says the same thing about those numbers: raids and island seizures can be done with tens of thousands; holding Iran cannot. The distance between 50,000 and 750,000 is the distance a draft would have to close.
What the White House says about a draft
On 8 March 2026, Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo told White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt: "Mothers out there are worried that we're going to have a draft — that they're going to see their sons and daughters get involved in this." Leavitt:
"It has been, and it will continue to be, and President Donald Trump, wisely, does not remove options off of the table. ... It's not part of the current plan right now, but the president, again, wisely keeps his options on the table."
(PolitiFact, 9 March 2026; Military.com). Military.com's report, filed under the web address "could-there-be-military-draft-trump-administration-says-its-table," read her answer as keeping a draft on the table. Defense Secretary Hegseth, asked about forces inside Iran, said the US did not have them at the time, and added: "We reserve the right."
Meanwhile the machinery was built. Automatic Selective Service registration for every man aged 18 to 26, using federal data, starts in December 2026 under the FY2026 defense law; Ynet, the Israeli news site, reported it under the headline "For more than 50 years there has been no conscription in the US. This step raises fears of a change" (Reserves, Guard, and the Draft).
How to use this page
When someone asks, "Did Israeli news really talk about a million Americans?", the answer is yes: the Jerusalem Post printed a plan for 750,000 to 1.5 million American troops for Iran and a way to recruit them from young Americans' debts. American analysts across the spectrum agree a ground war in Iran would take that many. The White House, asked about a draft, kept it "on the table." And automatic draft registration begins in December 2026.
