What Israeli Leaders Said About a Ground War in Iran

If you have only heard that Iran is being bombed, start here. The people who lead Israel have said, in public and on camera, that bombing is not enough: that toppling Iran's government needs "a ground component," that Iran's buried uranium must be taken out by people who "go in," and, from Israel's ambassador, that "we need boots on the ground," which he said should be Iranian. In the same weeks, Israel's own press reported that Israel's infantry would not go. This page puts their words in order and shows where the pieces point: to American soldiers on Iranian soil.

Evidence ratings: CONFIRMED for every quote below (video, transcripts, Israeli and American outlets). CONFIRMED that a US State Department legal opinion says the United States entered this war "at the request of and in the collective self-defense of its Israeli ally." STRONG that the ground force Israeli leaders called for, and would not supply, is an American one.

The words, in order

2 March 2026 — Benny Gantz, former IDF chief and defense minister: asked about boots on the ground in Iran, "I exclude nothing. We've been waiting for 47 years. And uh, we came to a point with every necessary means should be taken to achieve our goals" (Disclose.tv on X).

7 March 2026 — President Isaac Herzog, on Fox News: "it doesn't require troops on the ground," as Politico reported. Herzog's office is largely ceremonial. The government that runs the war said otherwise within days.

8 March 2026 — Ambassador Yechiel (Michael) Leiter, on CBS: Politico's headline was "Israeli ambassador to US declines to rule out putting boots on the ground in Iran." His words: "If that includes putting boots on the ground — our preference is for the boots on the ground to be those of the Iranians. … This has to be finished. This is a terror-sponsoring state that has to be brought down" (Politico, 8 March 2026).

19 March 2026 — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Jerusalem press conference:

"You can't do it only from there, you can do a lot of things from the air and we're doing, but there has to be a ground component, as well. There are many possibilities for this ground component, and I take the liberty of not sharing with you all those possibilities."

(Just the News, 20 March 2026). The same day, CBS News reported the Pentagon had made "detailed preparations for deploying U.S. ground forces into Iran," which the Jerusalem Post carried that night (Pentagon Ground Plans 2026).

22 March 2026 — Ambassador Leiter, on CNN: "I think that we need boots on the ground, but they have got to be Iranian boots, and I think they're coming" (Israel National News, 23 March 2026).

29–31 March 2026 — Israel's Channel 12, as widely relayed: if the US launches a ground operation in Iran, Israeli soldiers will not take part on the ground; Israel will help with airstrikes, intelligence, and airpower (Israel Keeps Its Infantry Home).

10 May 2026 — Netanyahu on CBS's 60 Minutes: the uranium "has to be taken out of Iran." How? "You go in, and you take it out." With whose forces? "I'm not gonna talk about military means, but ... what President Trump has said to me, 'I want to go in there'" (CBS News transcript).

10 June 2026 — Yoav Gallant, former defense minister, on 103FM: "The ability of the US Army together with the Israeli army existed, and that was something that should have been done" (Jerusalem Post).

16 June 2026 — Miki Zohar, cabinet minister, on Army Radio: "The US decided not to send its soldiers into Iranian territory to topple the current regime. Had they wanted the regime to fall, it would have fallen" (Jerusalem Post).

18 June 2026 — Defense Minister Israel Katz, on Channel 14: "We have never asked the United States to fight alongside us in Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria—we only want a diplomatic umbrella to protect us" (Channel 14). The list leaves out Iran.

4 September 2026 — Netanyahu: toppling Iran's regime "is the central mission still before us, but it is close. It is not impossible. It is within reach" (JNS, 4 September 2026).

Putting the pieces together

Read the sentences as one argument, the way an American parent would:

  1. The goal is the fall of Iran's government. Leiter: "This has to be finished." Netanyahu: the regime's fall is "within reach."
  2. Air power cannot do it. Netanyahu: "You can't do it only from there." Gallant: regime change from the air is "a fantasy."
  3. So there must be a ground force. Netanyahu: "there has to be a ground component." Leiter: "we need boots on the ground," naming Iranians, while Israel's own infantry stays home.
  4. It will not be Israel's infantry. Channel 12 and the Times of Israel said so; Israel's army chief told the cabinet the IDF was about 20,000 soldiers short (IDF manpower crisis).
  5. "Iranian boots" have not appeared. Six months after Leiter said "I think they're coming," no Iranian uprising had toppled the government.
  6. That leaves the army Gallant named: "the US Army." And the president Netanyahu quoted: "I want to go in there."

No Israeli official needed to say "send Americans." The ask is built into the logic, and Israeli ministers blamed Washington in public when it did not happen. Netanyahu's own summary of how the war began is telling: "When I came to President Trump a few weeks ago, I told him, 'We are going into Iran because I am not waiting'" (YouTube, 25 June 2026).

"At the request of" Israel

The US government itself has put the relationship in writing. A State Department legal opinion by legal adviser Reed Rubinstein says the United States entered the war "at the request of and in the collective self-defense of its Israeli ally, as well as in the exercise of the United States' own inherent right of self-defense." Snopes rated the claim TRUE (Snopes, 30 April 2026). Netanyahu says "ISRAEL DID NOT DRAG THE U.S. INTO A CONFLICT WITH IRAN" (C-SPAN, 3 June 2026). The American legal record says the war began at Israel's request. Go deeper: Did Israel Ask?

One Israeli general's warning

Gadi Eisenkot, a former IDF chief of staff now in the opposition, said of a ground invasion of Iran: "It's a huge country with 90 million residents. After Iraq and Afghanistan, that would be Vietnam times a hundred" (Jerusalem Post, 10 March 2026). He was describing what the others were asking for. Iraq and Afghanistan were American ground wars. See Troop Math for what "Vietnam times a hundred" means in soldiers.
