Trump says Iran in 'big trouble,' US will 'get involved' if regime kills protesters
The Times of Israel published this on 9 January 2026. Jacob Magid wrote it, with agencies. The headline is Trump says Iran in 'big trouble,' US will 'get involved' if regime kills protesters. President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House that the United States would get involved if Iran's government killed protesters. In the same breath he said that did not mean boots on the ground. An American family should care because "we will get involved" can sound like soldiers. On this day, the president drew the line at strikes, and said the line out loud.
Background for new readers: This article is from January 2026, seven weeks before the United States and Israel began a joint air war on Iran on 28 February 2026. At this point the story was mass street protests inside Iran and a regime shooting protesters. Eight months earlier, in June 2025, US bombers had already hit Iran's nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. This page records what the president said about ground troops before the war. This article is filed under No Boots on the Ground; the full article index lists every article on this shelf.
Evidence rating: MODERATE. The rating covers Trump's quoted words in the Times of Israel: a threat to hit Iran hard, paired with "That doesn't mean boots on the ground."
What the article says
Magid writes that Trump had made versions of this threat several times since protests began 13 days earlier. The Norway-based group Iran Human Rights said at least 51 protesters had been killed, the article reports. Trump told reporters that Iran was in big trouble, that people were taking over cities, and that Washington was watching.
He then tied any US role to killing by the government, and limited what that role would be.
That doesn't mean boots on the ground, but it means hitting them very, very hard where it hurts.
Donald Trump, speaking to reporters at the White House, as quoted by Jacob Magid in The Times of Israel on 9 January 2026. The sentence before it, in the same quote, is that if Iran started killing people as it had in the past, "we will get involved." He added, "We don't want that to happen."
The rest of the article is not about a troop plan. The leaders of France, Britain, and Germany condemned the killing of protesters and urged Tehran to show restraint, the article says. It describes protests calling for an end to the clerical system that has ruled Iran since 1979. It says Iranian state media blamed "terrorist agents" of the US and Israel for fires and violence, and said there were casualties, without detail. It says the full size of the protests was hard to know because the government had cut the internet and international calls.
What other reporting adds
The same day, on social media. A later post by the newsletter Tactical Report says Trump asked on social media on 9 January 2026, "When are the Iranian people going to rise up and fight?" and that Netanyahu said on Israeli TV, "We will bring down the regime in Iran, with all our agencies working toward it." (Tactical Report on X, 16 September 2026; the original Trump post was not captured; research capture: twitter/t13__v153.md). That is the picture in January: Iranians do the fighting on the ground, Washington hits from the air.
A week later. On 15 January 2026, the Jewish news account Belaaz reported that "President Donald Trump reportedly told Tehran that Washington had no plans to attack," after hours in which a strike looked imminent (Belaaz on X; research capture: twitter/t50__v599.md). Six weeks after that, the air war began.
How Trump's line moved once the war began. After the war started on 28 February 2026, the "no boots" line loosened. On 2 March he told the New York Post: "I don't have the yips with respect to boots on the ground – like every president says, 'There will be no boots on the ground.' I don't say it … I say 'probably don't need them' [or] 'if they were necessary.'" (as quoted by Yahoo News; research capture: twitter/t52__v618.md). On 7 March, aboard Air Force One, asked about ground troops: "Could there be? Possibly, for a very good reason. Have to be a very good reason." (PolitiFact, 9 March 2026; research capture: twitter/t48__v574.md). On 5 April, asked by The Hill whether he would exclude sending ground troops, he answered "No," as the account Defence Index reported it (Defence Index on X; the Hill article itself was not captured; research capture: twitter/t50__v597.md).
What it shows
This is the promise as it stood seven weeks before the war: hit Iran "where it hurts," but no boots on the ground. On 28 February the United States and Israel went to war with Iran. By 2 March the President was saying he would not repeat the no-boots line; by 20 March CBS reported the Pentagon's detailed preparations for ground forces in Iran; and in April more than 90 Americans were on the ground inside Iran.
