US dispatches Marine unit of 2,200 troops to Mideast - report

The Times of Israel published this liveblog entry on 13 March 2026. It has no byline. The headline is US dispatches Marine unit of 2,200 troops to Mideast - report. It says ABC News, citing two unnamed US officials, reported that about 2,200 Marines were being sent from Japan toward the Middle East on three Navy ships. An American family should care because these are ground-capable troops moving closer while the Iran war is underway. The same entry says that does not, by itself, mean they will step onto Iranian soil.

Background for new readers: On 28 February 2026 the United States and Israel began a joint air war on Iran. The Pentagon calls its part Operation Epic Fury; Israel calls its part Operation Roaring Lion. It came eight months after a shorter war in June 2025, when US bombers hit Iran's nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. The question running through this section is whether the air war turns into American soldiers fighting on Iranian soil. This article is filed under The Buildup; the full article index lists every article on this shelf.

Evidence rating: MODERATE. The Times of Israel liveblog, 13 March 2026, relays ABC News and two unnamed US officials: the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, based in Japan, was ordered to the Middle East. The entry also records that Trump officials had "largely avoided ruling out" ground troops since the war began.

What the article says

The entry says the unit is the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit. A Marine expeditionary unit is a packaged force of infantry, aircraft, and ships, built so commanders can send it ashore or keep it at sea. The entry says this one is permanently based in Japan and had been ordered to the Middle East, which it calls a further escalation of the Iran war. It says the unit also includes squads of F-35 fighter jets and MV-22 Osprey aircraft, which take off and land like a helicopter and fly like a plane.

It then records a change in what officials were willing to say.

Trump officials had long ruled out the idea of sending ground troops to the region, but have largely avoided ruling out the possibility since the outbreak of the war.

The Times of Israel liveblog, 13 March 2026. The entry does not put that sentence in a named official's mouth. The sentence before it attributes the dispatch itself to ABC News and two unnamed US officials.

The next sentence is the limit, and the entry attributes it to ABC: the deployment does not necessarily mean the troops will be deployed on the ground in Iran, because they can also provide land, amphibious, and aviation forces to commanders who need them.

What other reporting adds

Israeli TV put a plan next to the ships. Three days later, an X account summarizing Israel's Channel 14 wrote that the station "reports that the United States is planning potential ground operations," and that the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, "around 2,200 troops based in Japan, has been deployed to the Middle East." (research capture: twitter/t51__v612.md). That is Israeli television describing an American plan.

What the unit is for. One reply to that post argued the unit "has limited missions which are not primarily military engagement," and is most likely there to keep shipping moving through the strait (@Interlocateur on X, 16 March 2026). Another account summarized the reporting the next day: the Marines, led by the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli, add to about 50,000 US troops already in the region, "though no ground invasion of Iran has been confirmed or ruled out" (@ByHisGrace on X, 14 March 2026; research capture: twitter/t49__v580.md).

"Not boots on the ground," says a congressman. Representative Pete Sessions, a Texas Republican, described a possible island mission this way: "I believe that what these 2,500 Marines would be is to secure the island. The island is not, in my opinion, boots on the ground in combat circumstances. It's not like inside Iran in the cities." (as rendered on Threads, 17 March 2026; research captures: twitter/t52__v613.md, twitter/t52__v616.md). Critics answered that a Marine on an Iranian island is a Marine on Iranian soil.

What it shows

Two weeks into a war sold as air and sea only, Israel's leading English news site reported the first ground-capable force sent toward Iran: a Marine unit built to go ashore, with F-35s and Ospreys. The same entry marked the shift in official language, from ruling out ground troops to "largely avoided ruling out the possibility." Three days later Israel's Channel 14 reported that "the United States is planning potential ground operations."

This was the first step of a buildup that reached more than 50,000 troops in the region, two Marine Expeditionary Units, and an 82nd Airborne brigade. See The Buildup and No Boots on the Ground.
