Iran's parliament speaker claims 7 million have volunteered to fight US

On April 2, 2026, The Times of Israel published an Associated Press liveblog item, Iran's parliament speaker claims 7 million have volunteered to fight US. The item says an Iranian official claimed that millions of Iranians were ready to fight if the United States sent a ground force into Iran. An American family should care because that claim treats US troops on Iranian land as a real possibility.

Background for new readers: On 28 February 2026 the United States and Israel began a joint air war on Iran. The Pentagon calls its part Operation Epic Fury; Israel calls its part Operation Roaring Lion. It came eight months after a shorter war in June 2025, when US bombers hit Iran's nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. The question running through this section is whether the air war turns into American soldiers fighting on Iranian soil. This article is filed under Americans on Iranian Soil; the full article index lists every article on this shelf.

Evidence rating: MODERATE. The rating covers what Iran's parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, said, as the Associated Press reported and the Times of Israel carried: that about seven million people had volunteered to fight a US ground invasion. The item notes that the source of the number is unclear.

What the article says

The Associated Press, in The Times of Israel on April 2, 2026, led with this sentence:

Iran's parliament speaker claims that seven million Iranians stood ready to fight any US ground invasion of the Islamic Republic.

The speaker is Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf. The item says he has been discussed as a possible negotiating partner with the United States, and that he has challenged America in online posts since the war began. It says he wrote on X that, in less than a week, a national campaign had brought forward around 7 million Iranians who had declared they were ready to pick up arms and stand in defense of the country.

The item says that claim had already been circulating on social media, and that Qalibaf was the first high-ranking Iranian official to mention it. It notes that Iran is home to some 90 million people. It says state media and text-message campaigns had urged people to volunteer. It says the government had also called on retired soldiers to express interest in fighting. It says the Basij, the all-volunteer paramilitary force of the Revolutionary Guard, had begun accepting children as young as 12.

What other reporting adds

The number kept changing. A week earlier, Iran's Tasnim news agency, as carried by Al Jazeera, said more than one million Iranian fighters were prepared, "citing an Iranian military source" (research capture: twitter/t48__v572.md). In May, a widely shared post said Iran had called for one million volunteers and got 11 million. X's own trending summary answered that it "revives old reports without fresh proof" and that "no new May announcements appear from state media like Tasnim or IRNA" (X trending page, updated 16 May 2026; research capture: twitter/t48__v566.md). In September, an account summarizing the campaign, which Iran calls Janfada ("sacrifice for Iran"), cautioned: "These figures are largely self-reported by Iranian officials and state media, and are contested," and "So '1 million soldiers' is Iran's claim of registered/expected trainees, not a million combat-ready troops." (@theinformant_x on X, 18 September 2026; research capture: twitter/t48__v571.md).

Do not confuse Iran's millions with an American draft. Several viral posts in 2026 used "a million soldiers" in ways that mixed up Iran's own mobilization with claims that America would draft a million people. The research captures flag that confusion repeatedly (research captures: twitter/t48__v568.md, twitter/t48__v572.md). This page is about Iranians. It says nothing about drafting Americans.

What it shows

By 2 April 2026 Iran's leadership was preparing its public for American soldiers on the ground, and an Israeli paper was carrying that to its readers. Whatever the true number, a country of about 90 million mobilizing against a landing tells an American family what their sons and daughters would walk into. The Pentagon's own plans at the time, reported by CBS and the Washington Post, were for weeks of ground raids. See Pentagon Ground Plans 2026 and Troop Math.
