Top GOP Senator Says Trump Not Planning Major Ground Troops Inside Iran
On 1 March 2026, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz published Top GOP Senator Says Trump Not Planning Major Ground Troops Inside Iran, by Ben Samuels. Senator Tom Cotton, a Republican, said President Donald Trump was not planning to send major ground troops into Iran. An American family should care because this is one of the on-the-record denials. It is also a narrow one. "Major" is not "none."
Background for new readers: On 28 February 2026 the United States and Israel began a joint air war on Iran. The Pentagon calls its part Operation Epic Fury; Israel calls its part Operation Roaring Lion. It came eight months after a shorter war in June 2025, when US bombers hit Iran's nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. The question running through this section is whether the air war turns into American soldiers fighting on Iranian soil. This article is filed under No Boots on the Ground; the full article index lists every article on this shelf.
Evidence rating: MODERATE. The rated claim is Senator Tom Cotton's account, as Haaretz reports it, that major American ground forces were not planned inside Iran. The article body below the first paragraph did not load.
What the article says
Haaretz calls Cotton a vocal Republican supporter of Trump's use of force against Iran. The lead says that on Sunday he said the president does not plan on deploying major ground troops inside Iran. The lead does not put that sentence in quotation marks. It is the paper's report of what he said.
The deck under the headline did load. It says Cotton estimated that the U.S. campaign against Iran would last for probably a few weeks. It says he added that the main job left was destroying Iran's missile arsenal.
for probably a few weeks
Senator Tom Cotton, as Haaretz's deck quoted him on 1 March 2026, on how long he thought the campaign would last. In the same deck he described the remaining objective as "destroying Iran's vast missile arsenal."
What other reporting adds
Cotton's own words, on video. A clip of Cotton played by Tucker Carlson two days later carries the full answer. Asked whether the United States was putting boots on the ground: "No, Margaret." Then the exception: "we have combat search and rescue assets in the region that are prepared to go in and extract any downed pilot. But barring that kind of unusual circumstance, Margaret, the President has no plan for any kind of large-scale ground force inside of Iran." (transcript of the clip, YouTube, 3 March 2026; research capture: twitter/t52__v619.md). Carlson's reply was that "large-scale" leaves room for a small-scale force. Five weeks later, a rescue of exactly the kind Cotton described took place inside Iran (see WE GOT HIM: US commandos rescue downed F-15 airman).
Another senator, the same weekend, went further. Senator Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican, said on NBC's Meet the Press: "There will be no American boots on the ground. This is not Iraq. This is not Germany. This is not Japan. We're going to free the people up from the terrorist regime." (Newsweek, 2 March 2026; research capture: twitter/t52__v618.md). Graham was speaking as a senator, not for the White House. The next day Trump told the New York Post he does not say "there will be no boots on the ground."
What it shows
Cotton's denial was carefully sized: no major ground troops. On CBS he carved out combat search and rescue forces ready to go in and extract a downed pilot. That is exactly what happened in April, when more than 90 Americans went onto Iranian ground to rescue an F-15E crew. And within weeks of his remark, the Pentagon was preparing for weeks of ground operations near the Strait of Hormuz. See No Boots on the Ground and Americans on Iranian Soil.
