Hegseth: Iran's surrender is inevitable
On March 9, 2026, Israel National News published Hegseth: Iran's surrender is inevitable. The piece has no named reporter. It says Pete Hegseth, whom the article calls the Secretary of War, told CBS that Iran's surrender was inevitable, that the United States had not put ground forces in Iran, and that he would not rule that out. An American family should care because the man running the war is refusing to promise that their children will stay off Iranian soil.
Background for new readers: On 28 February 2026 the United States and Israel began a joint air war on Iran. The Pentagon calls its part Operation Epic Fury; Israel calls its part Operation Roaring Lion. It came eight months after a shorter war in June 2025, when US bombers hit Iran's nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. The question running through this section is whether the air war turns into American soldiers fighting on Iranian soil. This article is filed under No Boots on the Ground; the full article index lists every article on this shelf.
Evidence rating: CONFIRMED. The Hill's report on the same "60 Minutes" interview says Hegseth confirmed US forces were not on the ground in Iran and then said, "But we reserve the right," including "boots on the ground or no boots on the ground."
What the article says
The article says the interview was recorded on March 6 and aired on March 8. Hegseth said President Donald Trump's demand for Iran's "unconditional surrender" would happen whether Tehran admitted it or not. He said the United States had already struck 3,000 targets inside Iran, and that "this is only just the beginning." He rejected a claim, which the article attributes to some supporters of Trump, that Israel drew the United States into the war. He said Washington was "always controlling the throttle" and that the aim was to advance American interests and protect American lives. He also said that, combined, the US Air Force and the air force of the Israel Defense Forces were the two most powerful air forces in the world.
On the ground question, the article is direct. It says Hegseth said the United States has not deployed ground forces in Iran, but declined to rule out that possibility.
"President Trump knows, I know, you don't tell the enemy, you don't tell the press, you don't tell anybody what your limits would be on an operation."
Pete Hegseth, to CBS News's "60 Minutes," as quoted by Israel National News on March 9, 2026. The article's next sentence from him is that the United States was "willing to go as far as we need to in order to be successful."
The article says six US Army reservists were killed in an Iranian drone attack in Kuwait on March 1, and that Trump and Hegseth attended the return of their remains at Dover Air Force Base. It says one more American service member's death was announced on the afternoon of March 8. Hegseth said there would be more casualties. The article also says shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, the sea lane that carries about a fifth of the world's oil, had stalled, and that US gasoline had risen by nearly 50 cents a gallon, citing GasBuddy. Hegseth said the strait would be secured by "American firepower," and that what had been the Iranian navy was largely gone.
What other reporting adds
The same interview, as Military.com reported it. The US currently had no overt or covert forces in Iran, Hegseth told 60 Minutes, and then: "We reserve the right." (Military.com, 9 March 2026; research capture: twitter/t48__v569.md).
On whether Israel drew the US in. Hegseth's denial matches what Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in June, as C-SPAN's transcript renders it: "ISRAEL DID NOT DRAG THE U.S. INTO A CONFLICT WITH IRAN," and "I MISLED NO ONE AND I DID NOT HAVE TO CONVINCE PRESIDENT TRUMP." (C-SPAN, 3 June 2026; research capture: twitter/t13__v145.md). The opposite view came from inside Trump's own team. Joe Kent, who resigned as director of the National Counterterrorism Center in March, is quoted by an X user as saying: "the narrative & agenda spun by a foreign government- Israel, won the argument & forced us into this war" (@MyTardis_ on X, 21 September 2026; secondhand; research capture: twitter/t50__v597.md). This page records both claims. It does not settle them. See the investigation's who pushed for the war section.
What it shows
Hegseth's own words tell the public it will not be told the limit: "we reserve the right." Three weeks later he went further on camera: Iran "thinks there are 15 different ways we could come at them with boots on the ground. And guess what? There are." In April, more than 90 Americans were on the ground inside Iran. His denial that Israel pulled the United States in sits beside a State Department legal opinion saying the US entered the war "at the request of" its Israeli ally. See No Boots on the Ground.
