Richard Blumenthal predicts U.S. will deploy troops in Iran, though others dispute fears

On March 11, 2026, Jewish Insider published Richard Blumenthal predicts U.S. will deploy troops in Iran, though others dispute fears by Marc Rod and Emily Jacobs. An American family should care because, after a classified Senate briefing on the war, one senator said regime change in Iran cannot be done from the air and will require US troops in Iran. Other senators said that will not happen.

Evidence rating: MODERATE. The claim being rated is Senator Richard Blumenthal's on-record judgment, after a classified briefing, that the administration's objectives, especially regime change, require US troops in Iran. Other senators disagreed on the record; Axios reported fifteen days later that the military had prepared plans for ground operations to secure the enriched uranium.

What the article says

Rod and Jacobs write that Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat, spoke after a Tuesday morning classified briefing for the Senate Armed Services Committee. He said he was concerned the United States was headed toward putting troops in Iran. He had raised a similar worry after a briefing the week before. He told Jewish Insider there is no way to accomplish the administration's objectives, especially regime change, from 30,000 feet. He said military experts seem to agree that the job requires troops in Iran, and that destroying Iran's nuclear material would likely require some personnel there. He said public comments by President Donald Trump and other officials, including talk of looser rules of engagement, fed that fear. He called it "an air of recklessness," and he added a reference to what he had heard in the classified briefings. He did not describe the classified part.

Other senators did not back him. Senator Gary Peters, a Michigan Democrat, said "I don't know" when asked if he agreed that ground troops were likely. Senator Tommy Tuberville, an Alabama Republican on the same committee, forcefully denied to Jewish Insider that the United States would put troops on the ground in Iran. The article does not quote Tuberville's exact words. Senator Mike Rounds, a South Dakota Republican, said "That's interesting." Senator John Kennedy, a Louisiana Republican who is not on the committee, said Blumenthal is his friend but "needs to back off the crank. That's not going to happen."

Senator John Fetterman, a Pennsylvania Democrat and a supporter of the war effort so far, said he would not support boots on the ground. He said he believes most Americans agree with that line. He said he had just watched Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth say they are never going to make it about nation-building. Fetterman said he would vote for extra military funding if it came up. Blumenthal said he would not write a blank check, because officials had told lawmakers they already had enough resources and had not explained why a supplemental bill was needed. The article also reports that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, with Senators Jack Reed and Jeanne Shaheen, wrote to Trump asking Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Hegseth to testify in public.

"Every military expert seems to agree that it requires troops in Iran, and likely, as well, destruction of the nuclear material that Iran has right now will require some presence of personnel."

What other reporting and posts add

Blumenthal said it more than once, in stronger words. After a briefing a week earlier, a post quoted him: "I am more fearful than ever, after this briefing that we may be putting boots on the ground." (That post's own additions, about a draft and 50,000 troops, are the poster's, not Blumenthal's.) @TPV_John, 4 March 2026. (capture: twitter/t13__v149.md) A week after this article, the Daily Mail quoted him after another classified briefing: "We seem to be on a path toward deploying American troops on the ground in Iran to accomplish any of the potential objectives here." @OwenGregorian posting the Daily Mail, 18 March 2026. (capture: twitter/t13__v150.md)

The uranium point he raised became a real plan. Blumenthal said destroying Iran's nuclear material "will require some presence of personnel." Axios reported on 26 March that "Plans for ground operations to secure enriched uranium within Iran's nuclear facilities have also been prepared by the U.S. military." The Independent, 26 March 2026. (capture: twitter/t56__v668.md) In June, CNN reported the military rushed to prepare that mission before Trump paused it; see US military rushed to prepare ground mission.

Israel's prime minister agreed with him on the logic. On 10 May, Benjamin Netanyahu told CBS the uranium "has to be taken out of Iran" and, asked how: "You go in, and you take it out." CBS News transcript. (capture: twitter/t13__v145.md)

What it shows

Blumenthal named the logic the rest of the war confirmed: regime change cannot be done from 30,000 feet, and "destruction of the nuclear material that Iran has right now will require some presence of personnel." Senators who said "That's not going to happen" were answered by events: on 26 March Axios reported "Plans for ground operations to secure enriched uranium within Iran's nuclear facilities have also been prepared by the U.S. military"; in April more than 90 Americans were on the ground inside Iran; in June CNN reported the uranium mission was prepared and then paused; and in May Netanyahu said of the uranium, "You go in, and you take it out." The personnel Blumenthal described would be American (see Congress and the Public and Kharg Island and the Uranium Raid).
