Iran intensifies recruitment, repression amid reports of thousands of security deaths, Washington weighs ground operations

On 31 March 2026, Janatan Sayeh published Iran intensifies recruitment, repression amid reports of thousands of security deaths, Washington weighs ground operations in FDD's Long War Journal. Sayeh is a research analyst at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a Washington think tank. He writes that Washington has signaled it might widen the war, including possible ground options, while Israel keeps striking Iran's security forces. An American family should care because the page is about whether elite US units are being lined up for operations inside Iran, not only for strikes from the air.

Evidence rating: MODERATE. The rating covers Janatan Sayeh's summary, for the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, of news reports on US preparations and options for potential operations inside Iran, and on troops deployed to the region.

What the article says

Sayeh's opening line is that Washington has signaled readiness to expand operations, including potential ground options, while continuing strikes on Iran's military and weapons sites. He writes that Israeli strikes on the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (the regime's main security force), the Basij paramilitary militia, and the police have, by his account, caused thousands of casualties in the forces that repress people at home.

He writes that President Donald Trump wrote on 30 March that, without a near-term agreement, US forces could dismantle core infrastructure, including the power grid, oil production, and desalination plants. He writes that Trump paired those warnings with claims that negotiations were underway. That is Sayeh's account of the post, not the post itself.

He then cites two US news reports from the same day. He writes that The Washington Post reported that the Pentagon was preparing for a prolonged ground campaign, with thousands of additional US troops deployed to the region.

CBS noted the same day that the growing presence of elite US units, including Navy SEALs and Army Rangers alongside Marines and airborne forces, is intended to give Washington flexible options for potential operations inside Iran.

Janatan Sayeh, FDD's Long War Journal, 31 March 2026, describing a CBS report.

Sayeh writes that regime-linked media described a much larger campaign. He writes that the Tehran Times claimed on 27 March that a plan would start with killings of senior officials and strikes on major cities, then a ground phase. He puts the paper's figures in quotation marks: "4,000" fighters entering from the northwest, and "5,000" US troops split between Bahrain and southeastern routes. He writes that the paper also named airports in Bandar Abbas, Kermanshah, Urmia, and Tabriz for airlifts, plus helicopter teams aimed at missile and nuclear-related sites. He presents that as an Iranian outlet's claim, not as a confirmed US plan.

The rest of the article is about the air war and about Iran recruiting more security manpower. Sayeh writes that an Israeli military spokesman said more than 2,000 members of the Guard, the Basij, and the police had been killed, and that Iran International, citing an unnamed source, claimed higher numbers. He also lists Iranian officers he says were killed between 28 and 31 March.

What other reporting and posts add

The Washington Post report, in readers' copies. Posts that quoted the Post story Sayeh cites add a line from further down it: "Seizing Iranian territory will embarrass the Iranian regime and create valuable bargaining chips in future negotiations, this official said." @Ayei_Eloheichem, 29 March 2026. (capture: twitter/t51__v606.md) See Pentagon prepares for weeks of ground operations in Iran.

Iran's recruitment numbers, and doubts about them. Five days before this piece, a widely shared post read: "Iran is preparing 1 million troops for a US invasion, per Tasnim News." @unusual_whales, 26 March 2026. (capture: twitter/t48__v565.md) Iran's parliament speaker later "claimed 7 million volunteers ready to fight," and by May an X summary called an "11 Million" claim unverified, saying analysts saw such figures as "symbolic morale boosts for the Basij paramilitary rather than verified enlistments." Israel's own role in a ground operation. Around the same days, Israel's Channel 12 was reported as saying Israel would support a US ground operation "with airstrikes, intelligence, and airpower, but not infantry," a claim an X summary said had "no direct confirmation" on Channel 12's own site. What it shows

A leading pro-Israel think tank in Washington tracked reports of SEALs, Rangers, Marines, and airborne troops, and of "options for potential operations" inside Iran. The advocates of the war were watching the ground option take shape while the public was told it was off the table. See Pentagon Ground Plans 2026 and No Boots on the Ground.

Status: Donald Trump is alive. Janatan Sayeh is alive.

Background for a newcomer: the United States and Israel began bombing Iran on 28 February 2026. The Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD) is a Washington think tank known for hard-line views on Iran's government; its Long War Journal tracks wars and militant groups. This piece, written a month into the war, summarizes the first wave of reports that Washington was weighing American ground operations, alongside claims about Iran recruiting more fighters to meet them. Navy SEALs and Army Rangers are elite raid units; the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) is Iran's ideological military force, and the Basij is its volunteer militia.
