Rubio says US can achieve Iran objectives without ground troops

Reuters published Rubio says US can achieve Iran objectives without ground troops on March 27, 2026. The page byline says Reuters. At the bottom it credits reporting to Humeyra Pamuk and writing to Simon Lewis. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters in Paris that the United States could meet its Iran war aims without ground troops, and that he expected the operation to end in weeks, not months. An American family should care because a cabinet officer said soldiers do not have to go in. In the next breath he said thousands more troops had been sent to the region so the president would have choices if the war changed. A denial of need is not a ban.

Evidence rating: MODERATE. This is Reuters' report of what a named secretary of state said to reporters, including his remarks that leave room for the president to use the extra forces if contingencies arise.

What the article says

The article says Rubio spoke on Friday, March 27, 2026, before flying home from France. He had met foreign ministers of the G7, the group of seven large industrial democracies. The page says the United States and Israel launched the conflict late the previous month.

Rubio said the aims were to destroy Iran's missiles and drones, the factories that make them, and Iran's navy and air force. He said the United States was meeting those aims and expected to finish in weeks, not months.

"We are ahead of schedule on most of them, and we can achieve them without any ground troops, without any,"

Marco Rubio, U.S. Secretary of State, as quoted by Reuters on March 27, 2026. The page prints the sentence ending on the words "without any," and does not finish the phrase.

The article says recent deployments of thousands more troops to the region were meant to give President Donald Trump options if contingencies arose. Rubio declined to go into operational details. The page quotes him saying the president has to be prepared for more than one contingency, and that officials will give him maximum room to adjust if those contingencies emerge. Read plainly, he said the current aims do not need ground troops, and he also said extra forces are there so the plan can change.

The article also says Rubio suggested Iran might set up a toll for ships in the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow sea lane at the mouth of the Persian Gulf. He said European and Asian countries that trade through it should help keep passage free once the fighting stops. That is about shipping after the war.

What other reporting and posts add

The full sentence, on video. Reuters stops the quote at "without any." A Forbes Breaking News video of the same Paris remarks carries the rest, as the capture transcribed it: "We are achieving all those objectives. We are ahead of schedule on most of them. And we can achieve them without any ground troops, without any." Then: "the president has to be prepared for multiple contingencies which I'm not going to discuss in the media." And: "But we can achieve all of our objectives without ground troops, but we are always going to be prepared to give the president maximum optionality and maximum opportunity to adjust to contingencies should they emerge." The denial and the open door came in back-to-back sentences. Forbes Breaking News on YouTube, 27 March 2026. What happened the next 48 hours. One day earlier, on 26 March, the three-star general who commands Marine Forces Reserve, Lt. Gen. Leonard F. Anderson IV, had written to reservists, according to a widely shared copy: "This is not a theoretical exercise. Our forces are currently engaged in operations connected to Iran and are positioned to preserve stability in the Western Hemisphere. Our enemies get a vote, and a mass mobilization could become reality." @shanaka86, 29 March 2026, which quotes the letter and Rubio side by side. No Pentagon denial of the letter appeared in the captures. (capture: twitter/t54__v641.md) The next evening, 28 March, The Washington Post reported the Pentagon was preparing for weeks of ground operations in Iran; see Pentagon reportedly preparing for weeks of ground operations.

What it shows

Reuters' own text puts the two halves together: no ground troops needed, and forces deployed so the president has room to change plans. The next day the Washington Post reported the Pentagon preparing for weeks of ground operations in Iran; within ten days more than 90 Americans were on Iranian soil in the F-15E rescue. Status: Marco Rubio is alive. Donald Trump is alive.

Why this matters to a newcomer: by late March 2026, a month into the US-Israeli air war on Iran that began on 28 February, the United States was moving thousands of Marines and paratroopers toward the region. Americans wanted to know whether those troops would go into Iran. Marco Rubio, the Secretary of State (the president's top diplomat), was the senior official who answered on camera. His answer had two halves, and both matter.
