Thousands of US Army paratroopers arrive in Middle East as buildup intensifies

On 30 March 2026, Reuters published Thousands of US Army paratroopers arrive in Middle East as buildup intensifies. Idrees Ali and Phil Stewart reported from Washington. The page was updated on 31 March. It says thousands of soldiers from the US Army's 82nd Airborne Division, parachute troops based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, had started arriving in the Middle East. An American family should care because the story lists missions those soldiers might later be given inside Iran, including seizing an oil island or digging out buried nuclear material.

Evidence rating: MODERATE. Two unnamed US officials told Reuters, in a report by Idrees Ali and Phil Stewart, that the paratroopers were arriving and that the missions under discussion included Kharg Island, the buried uranium, and Iran's shoreline. The rating covers the arrival and the missions as Reuters reported them.

What the article says

Reuters says the soldiers started arriving on Monday as President Donald Trump weighed his next steps in the war against Iran. It says Reuters had reported on 18 March that the administration was considering thousands more US troops in the Middle East, which would expand options to include forces inside Iranian territory.

The paratroopers add to sailors, Marines, and Special Operations forces already sent, the article says. About 2,500 Marines arrived over the weekend. The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, did not say where the soldiers were going, but Reuters says the move was expected. The added force includes parts of the 82nd Airborne headquarters, some logistics and other support, and one brigade combat team. A brigade combat team is a few thousand soldiers organized to fight as a unit, not the whole division.

One source gave the purpose of the move.

No decision has been made to send troops into Iran, but they will build up capacity for potential future operations in the region, one of the sources said.

Reuters then lists uses under discussion. One is an attempt to seize Kharg Island, which the article calls the hub for 90 percent of Iran's oil exports. It says there had been talks earlier that month about taking the island, and that the move would be highly risky because Iran can hit the island with missiles and drones.

Another option, Reuters reports from its own earlier coverage, is ground forces inside Iran to extract highly enriched uranium, uranium processed to a very high concentration. The article says that job could put US troops deeper inside Iran for longer, trying to dig out material that is deep underground.

A third discussion was putting US troops inside Iran so oil tankers could pass through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow sea lane at the mouth of the Persian Gulf. Reuters says that mission would rely mostly on air and naval forces, but could also mean troops on Iran's shoreline.

The article says Trump said on Monday that the United States was in talks with a "more reasonable regime" to end the war, and that he again warned Tehran to open the strait or face US attacks on oil wells and power plants. It says any use of US ground troops, even a limited one, could be politically risky, because public support for the Iran campaign was low and Trump had promised before the election to avoid new Middle East wars.

Reuters says that since operations started on 28 February, the United States had struck more than 11,000 targets. It says more than 300 US troops had been injured and 13 service members killed in Operation Epic Fury, the US name for this war.

What other reporting and posts add

The Pentagon confirmed the deployment to Fox News days earlier. A post circulated widely on about 24 to 25 March read: "Elements of 82nd Airborne, including 1st Brigade Combat Team, a core component of nation's Immediate Response Force, are deploying to Middle East, Pentagon official confirms to Fox News' @Liz_Friden." That line comes from an X search page that did not preserve the original post's link. (captures: twitter/t51__v608.md, twitter/t50__v599.md) A 24 March post, also citing Fox News, said the 82nd's commander, Maj. Gen. Brandon Tegtmeier, was "deploying IMMEDIATELY with his entire headquarters staff to the Middle East"; its claim that "boots-on-the-ground invasion prep is underway" is the poster's reading, not Fox's. @TheMaineWonk, 24 March 2026. Reservists were told to get ready too. On 26 March, Lt. Gen. Leonard F. Anderson IV, commander of Marine Forces Reserve, wrote to reservists, in a letter quoted in full by one widely read account: "This is not a theoretical exercise. Our forces are currently engaged in operations connected to Iran and are positioned to preserve stability in the Western Hemisphere. Our enemies get a vote, and a mass mobilization could become reality." No Pentagon denial of the letter appeared in the captures. @shanaka86, 29 March 2026. (capture: twitter/t54__v641.md)

Israel said its own infantry would stay home. The same weekend the paratroopers landed, Israeli TV's Channel 12 was reported as saying Israel would help a US ground operation "with airstrikes, intelligence, and airpower, but not infantry." An X summary later said that claim had "no direct confirmation" on Channel 12's own site. X trend, 30 March 2026; caution card. (captures: twitter/t13__v148.md, twitter/t13__v150.md)

Later, part of the 82nd went to Israel. Independent reporter Ken Klippenstein reported in June that a leaked Army order dated 7 April sent one company of the 82nd's 2nd Battalion, 501st Infantry Regiment to Israel on temporary duty, linked, according to an X summary of his report, to "joint contingency planning" "for seizing Iranian-controlled Kharg Island in the Persian Gulf and carving out coastal territory inside Iran." Iran dared them to come. In September, Mohsen Rezaee, then described as secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, said in a clip: "Why don't they deploy airborne divisions? Why don't American ground forces enter Iran? Why do they only bomb from the sky and then leave?" That is an Iranian official's taunt. @maxosintintel, 20 September 2026. What it shows

Reuters, the world's largest wire service, reported the Army's rapid-response paratroopers landing in the region with a list of missions that are all on Iranian soil. In the same days the Pentagon confirmed the 82nd's 1st Brigade was deploying, the Marine Reserve commander told reservists "a mass mobilization could become reality," and Israel's Channel 12 was reported saying Israel would help a US ground operation with everything "but not infantry." A week later, a leaked Army order sent a company of the 82nd to Israel, tied in reporting to joint planning for Kharg Island and "carving out coastal territory inside Iran." The ground option was being built with American soldiers. See The Buildup and Israel Keeps Its Infantry Home.

Status: Donald Trump is alive.

New to this? The United States and Israel began bombing Iran on 28 February 2026. A month later, the United States started moving ground combat units, not just planes and ships, toward the region. The 82nd Airborne Division is the Army's parachute force, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina; its "Immediate Response Force" brigade is kept ready to fly anywhere in the world within about a day. When those soldiers land in the Middle East, families of the roughly 3,000 paratroopers in a brigade are the first to feel it.
