VPP News retells the Jerusalem Post column on debt forgiveness and an Iran ground war

On 3 September 2026, VPP News, a Substack that says it reports from the West Bank, published Jerusalem Post Opinion Piece Proposes Debt Forgiveness to Recruit Americans for a Potential Ground War Against Iran. It is a short retelling of the 30 August 2026 Jerusalem Post opinion column by AJ Jaff. The original column is on its own page in this section: The war with Iran will not be won through airstrikes. This page exists because the numbers were already moving into smaller outlets and, the same week, into posts on X.

Evidence rating: MODERATE. VPP accurately restates what the Jerusalem Post column says, and this investigation opened the column itself.

What the article says

VPP writes that the Jerusalem Post piece estimates a ground campaign could require 750,000 to 1.5 million American troops, against an active US Army of about 452,000. It says the proposed fix is a federal debt-forgiveness enlistment program that would clear student loans, credit-card debt, and other loans after 24 or 36 months, plus GI Bill benefits. It says the column points at Americans aged 18 to 34.

A recent opinion piece published by The Jerusalem Post proposes using debt forgiveness as an incentive to recruit large numbers of young Americans into the US military for a potential ground invasion of Iran.

What other reporting and posts add

The column is real, and it drew a reply from Iran. An AI-assistant reply on X on 1 September confirmed "it is a real August 30, 2026 opinion piece in The Jerusalem Post by AJ Jaff," and added: "CENTCOM did email analysts in late July 2026 seeking 'creative and unconventional ways to pressure and punish Iran.'" It described the column as the author's answer to that request. The CENTCOM email is described, not shown. @grok, 1 September 2026. (capture: twitter/t14__v161.md) On 4 September, according to an account that relays Iranian news, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei pointed Americans to the column and argued they would pay "the bill" through their taxes while their children become what he calls "cannon fodder" for a war they never chose. Those are his words secondhand. @TheIranianzg3z, 4 September 2026. (capture: twitter/t14__v166.md)

The author's own later framing. On 15 September, posting as @aj_geo_analysis, the column's author wrote that the Pentagon "would likely need somewhere around 750,000 to 1,500,000 American soldiers (or mercenaries)" for "a ground invasion by Q3 2027," and that "Iran's Foreign Ministry responded to my article directly in a public statement as did the @WhiteHouse." @aj_geo_analysis, 15 September 2026. (capture: twitter/t15__v176.md) The "Q3 2027" date and "or mercenaries" are in his post, not in the column text. See The Jerusalem Post column: 750,000 to 1.5 million American troops for the full account.

How the idea was misdescribed as it spread. By late September, some posts called the column a "white paper" that would "force" men to fight. The column's own mechanism is debt relief in exchange for enlistment. @Kayc16y, 22 September 2026. (capture: twitter/t14__v164.md) For readers retelling this story, the accurate short version is VPP's: an Israeli newspaper printed an opinion proposing debt forgiveness to recruit Americans for a possible ground war.

What it shows

The Jerusalem Post column did not stay in the Jerusalem Post. Within four days a small outlet was retelling it in one plain sentence: an Israeli newspaper proposes debt forgiveness "to recruit large numbers of young Americans into the US military for a potential ground invasion of Iran." Iran's foreign ministry answered it by name.

The spread shows what the column put in front of the American public: a ground war sized at 750,000 to 1.5 million American troops, and a way to fill the ranks from young Americans' debts. See The Jerusalem Post Column and Half a Million to a Million.

Why a newcomer should care: the United States and Israel have been at war with Iran since 28 February 2026. The Jerusalem Post is Israel's oldest English-language daily. Its 30 August column (see The war with Iran will not be won through airstrikes) put a number on an American ground war, 750,000 to 1.5 million troops, against an active Army of about 452,000, and proposed paying off young Americans' debts to recruit them. This VPP News item is one of the ways that number spread.
