← Israel Keeps Its Infantry Home
What Israel Did Put Inside Iran
Evidence rating: STRONG. Israeli outlets and Israeli-linked analysts describe small Israeli special-forces and Mossad teams operating inside Iran, Israeli intelligence handed to Washington for an American ground operation, and a Mossad plan to send armed Iranian militias toward Tehran. None of it is infantry holding ground.
Israel's absence from a ground war in Iran is not an absence from Iran. It is a choice about which jobs Israel does and which jobs it leaves to others.
Special forces and Mossad
Israel Hayom reported on 3 March 2026 that IDF special forces and Mossad operatives had conducted a ground operation inside Iran (Israel Hayom, 3 March 2026). Mossad is Israel's foreign intelligence service. After the June 2025 war its director, David Barnea, told his agents, as quoted in a March 2026 post: "We will continue to be there, like we have been there" (Shanaka Anslem Perera on X, 3 March 2026).
Gregg Roman of the Middle East Forum told the Times of Israel that if there were not one Israeli soldier on Iranian territory, "that would be strategic malpractice," and that Israel already had personnel operating there "in one way or another." His summary of the division of labor: "This isn't about Israel not contributing to an Israeli-led campaign; this is about Israel doing what America asks of it in an American-initiated campaign" (Times of Israel, 1 April 2026; article page).
Intelligence for an American ground operation
Israeli defense sources told the Times of Israel that the IDF had given the United States intelligence on the Strait of Hormuz and nearby islands, including Kharg, the island that handles about 90 percent of Iran's oil exports. An Israeli security official told Israel's public broadcaster on 30 March: "The IDF is providing the US with intelligence ahead of a potential American ground operation in Iran" (The War Reporter on X, 30 March 2026).
The targets Israel mapped are the targets the Pentagon was planning to seize with Marines and paratroopers. See Kharg Island and the Uranium Raid.
A Mossad plan for someone else's army
Israel Hayom's Itay Ilnai reported on 17 September 2026 a plan he attributes to Barnea: a long effort to arm and train Kurdish militias and other minorities to move on Tehran. An official "intimately familiar" with it told the paper: "I'm talking about boots on the ground, an invasion," with tens of thousands of armed young Iranians under Israeli Air Force cover. "Everything is ready and waiting for the order." "All we need is for Trump to give us the green light" (Israel Hayom, 17 September 2026; article page).
The same article quotes a retired two-star US Air Force general, identified only as "P.," on the American side of the equation: "It would be very difficult for Israel to persuade the Americans to undertake a massive ground operation inside Iran." The sentence assumes what this section documents: that persuading Americans to undertake a ground operation is an Israeli project.
Early in the war, the White House called reports of an approved plan to arm Kurds "completely false," and Defense Secretary Hegseth said, "None of our objectives are premised on the support or the arming of any particular force" (as quoted on X, 4 March 2026). The Jewish Chronicle reported the US offering "extensive air cover" for Kurds to seize parts of western Iran (article page).
The division of labor
| Task | Who, per the reports |
|---|---|
| Opening strikes on leaders and air defenses | Israel and the United States |
| Small covert teams inside Iran | Israel (Israel Hayom), and US special forces in the April rescue |
| Intelligence for a ground operation | Israel, for the US |
| Arming Iranian militias | A Mossad plan, awaiting "the green light" from Trump |
| Infantry holding Iranian ground | The United States, if anyone |
Status: David Barnea is alive. Gregg Roman is alive. Itay Ilnai is alive. Pete Hegseth is alive. Donald Trump is alive.
