Did Israel Ask? "At the Request of" Israel, in the US Government's Own Words
Evidence rating: CONFIRMED that a State Department legal opinion says the United States entered the Iran war "at the request of and in the collective self-defense of its Israeli ally" (rated TRUE by Snopes). STRONG that Israel pressed for American ground action against Iran's nuclear sites as early as June 2025 (Axios, via an unnamed senior US official) and that Israel's leaders publicly called for a ground component they would not supply.
Israel's prime minister says Israel did not drag the United States into this war. The United States government, in a legal document, says it went in at Israel's request. Here is the record.
The State Department's legal opinion
Snopes, the fact-checking site, rated TRUE the claim that an official US document said the country entered the war at Israel's request. It quotes the opinion of State Department legal adviser Reed Rubinstein, posted 21 April 2026:
The United States entered the Iran war "at the request of and in the collective self-defense of its Israeli ally, as well as in the exercise of the United States' own inherent right of self-defense."
Snopes also cites a 10 March 2026 letter to the United Nations from US Ambassador Michael Waltz saying operations were "being conducted in close cooperation with, and in the collective self-defense of Israel" (Snopes, 30 April 2026).
Israel's request is listed first. The American self-defense ground is listed second, "as well as." And the Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported, citing Reuters, that Pentagon officials told Congress on 1 March that there was no intelligence Iran planned to attack US forces first (article page). Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on 2 March that the US "knew that there was going to be an Israeli action" (quoted by Snopes).
June 2025: "do it with humans"
During the twelve-day war of June 2025, Axios reported, citing an unnamed senior US official, as relayed on X:
"Israelis are effectively encouraging the US to engage in a ground war with Iran if an air war doesn't immobilize Iranian nuclear sites. The Israelis told the Trump administration that while they may not be able to reach deep enough into the mountain with bombs, they may 'do it with humans.'"
(MonitorX on X, 19 June 2025). Five days earlier Axios had reported that "Israel has urged the U.S. to join the military operation against Iran's nuclear program, citing its inability to destroy the heavily fortified Fordow site alone" (GeoInsider on X, 14 June 2025). US bombers struck Fordow on 22 June 2025. See the June 2025 war.
The pattern is a ladder. First Israel asks the US to join with bombers. Then, if bombs cannot reach deep enough, "humans."
What Netanyahu says
- To Fox News, 2 March 2026, he called the idea that he dragged Trump in "ridiculous."
- At a 3 June 2026 news conference, per C-SPAN's caption: "ISRAEL DID NOT DRAG THE U.S. INTO A CONFLICT WITH IRAN" and "I MISLED NO ONE AND I DID NOT HAVE TO CONVINCE PRESIDENT TRUMP" (C-SPAN, 3 June 2026).
- In clips from later that month he described it another way: "When I came to President Trump a few weeks ago, I told him, 'We are going into Iran because I am not waiting,'" and "I did not ask for permission. I simply informed him of our plans" (YouTube, 25 June 2026).
"I simply informed him" and "at the request of" describe the same thing from two sides: Israel set the course, and the United States followed it in.
What Israel's own supporters concede
Avi Mayer, writing in the Jerusalem Journal to argue that "America didn't go to war for Israel," granted that "Netanyahu pitched President Donald Trump on a military campaign against the regime for several months, arguing that delaying it would allow Iran to create a 'shield of immunity' of missiles" (Jerusalem Journal, 16 April 2026). Defense Minister Israel Katz credited Netanyahu with "bringing the United States to act alongside Israel against Iran" (Israel National News).
Joe Kent, director of the National Counterterrorism Center, resigned on 17 March 2026. His letter, as quoted by Al Majalla, said Iran posed "no imminent threat" and that the administration "started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby" (Al Majalla).
And Katz's "never asked"
Israel's defense minister told Channel 14 on 18 June 2026: "We have never asked the United States to fight alongside us in Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria—we only want a diplomatic umbrella to protect us" (Channel 14). Read the list. Iran is not on it.
Status: Benjamin Netanyahu is alive. Reed Rubinstein is alive. Michael Waltz is alive. Marco Rubio is alive. Israel Katz is alive. Avi Mayer is alive. Joe Kent is alive. Donald Trump is alive.
