June 2025: The Denial, Then the Strikes

Before there was a 2026 war, there was a rehearsal of how it would be explained. In June 2025, during what became known as the twelve-day war between Israel and Iran, the White House told the public that American forces were only defending themselves and that a ground war was "the last thing you want to do." Within days, American B-2 bombers struck Iran's three main nuclear sites. And in the hours after the strikes, the Vice President said the United States had "no interest in boots on the ground."

Eight months later the same officials, using the same words, were at war with Iran, and the Pentagon was preparing ground operations. This page shows the June 2025 sequence day by day, because it is the clearest lesson in how to read the 2026 denials.

Evidence rating: CONFIRMED. Each statement and each strike below is reported by named outlets: Axios, the Associated Press, Reuters, and the Times of Israel. STRONG that Israel was pressing Washington toward a ground role even then: Axios reported it from a senior US official.

The days in order

Mid-June 2025. Israel begins striking Iran, and the twelve-day war starts. The American strikes that followed came, as the Times of Israel reported, after more than a week of Israeli strikes in the same war. (See the twelve-day war.)

16–17 June. As rumors spread that the United States had joined the attack, White House spokesperson Alex Pfeiffer told Axios: "American forces are maintaining their defensive posture, and that has not changed" (Axios on X; Axios). A longer version circulating the same hour, attributed to a White House deputy assistant, began: "Reports of the US attacking in Iran are not true" (@amitisinvesting on X, 17 June 2025).

19 June. Axios reported, from a senior US official, that "Israelis are effectively encouraging the US to engage in a ground war with Iran if an air war doesn't immobilize Iranian nuclear sites," and that Israel said it might "do it with humans" (as relayed by MonitorX on X, 19 June 2025). This is the earliest report in our record of Israel pushing the United States toward ground action against Iran's nuclear sites. See Israeli leaders on a ground war.

20 June (Friday). The Associated Press: "Trump told reporters Friday that he was not interested in sending ground forces into Iran, saying it's "the last thing you want to do"" (Defense News / AP, 22 June 2025; article page).

21–22 June (Saturday night). Operation Midnight Hammer. US forces struck Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan with, as the Times of Israel reported, 14 bunker-buster bombs, more than two dozen Tomahawk missiles, and over 125 military aircraft (Times of Israel, 22 June 2025). Trump posted that all planes were outside Iranian airspace and "a full payload of bombs" was dropped on Fordow.

22 June (Sunday). The administration described the strikes as the end, not the beginning:

  • Vice President JD Vance on NBC's Meet the Press: "We're not at war with Iran. We're at war with Iran's nuclear program." And, in the Times of Israel's words, "He reiterated that the US had no interest in boots on the ground" (Times of Israel, 22 June 2025; article page). Reuters reported the same line: Vance "had no interest in boots on the ground" (Reuters; article page).
  • Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth: "This mission was not and has not been about regime change" (Reuters, same article); the strikes were "intentionally limited" (Times of Israel).
  • The same day, President Trump posted a question: if the Iranian government cannot "MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN," then "why wouldn't there be a Regime change???" (Reuters). His officials said regime change was not the goal; he raised it himself hours later.

25 June. The White House published a release titled "Iran's Nuclear Facilities Have Been Obliterated — and Suggestions Otherwise are Fake News" (White House, 25 June 2025). If the sites were obliterated, the job was done.

What came next

  • 9 January 2026. Trump: "That doesn't mean boots on the ground, but it means hitting them very, very hard where it hurts" (Times of Israel).
  • 28 February 2026. The United States and Israel launch a full war on Iran. The first wave kills Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Regime change, denied in June, is the openly stated hope in February.
  • March 2026. The "obliterated" uranium becomes the reason for a ground raid: Netanyahu says it "has to be taken out of Iran" and "You go in, and you take it out" (see Israeli leaders on a ground war); the Pentagon prepares options to seize it (see Kharg Island and the uranium raid).
  • April 2026. More than 90 American service members are on the ground in Iran during the F-15E rescue (see Americans already on Iranian soil).

The template

Line the two years up and the pattern is plain:

StepJune 20252026
Calm the public"defensive posture ... has not changed"; ground war "the last thing you want to do""no plans ... at this time"; "a waste of time"; "nowhere near"
ActB-2 strikes on Fordow, Natanz, Isfahanfull war from 28 February; Marines, paratroopers, special forces sent
Limit the scope in words"not at war with Iran"; "no interest in boots on the ground"; "not about regime change""without any ground troops"; "not part of the plan for this operation"
The next step anywayRegime change raised by the President the same daySupreme leader killed; ground plans prepared; troops on Iranian soil in April

The lesson for a family is not that every sentence was false on the day it was spoken. It is that each sentence described only the present, and each present was followed by a larger next step. The Israeli pressure for a ground role, reported by Axios in June 2025, was there from the start.

Status: Donald Trump is alive. JD Vance is alive. Pete Hegseth is alive. Alex Pfeiffer is alive. Ali Khamenei is deceased (2026).
