The Saudi Crown Prince and US Boots on the Ground
Evidence rating: STRONG that the New York Times reported, from people briefed by American officials, that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman urged President Trump to keep the war going and to put US boots on the ground to seize Iran's energy sites. The Times of Israel and the Jewish Chronicle carried the report on 24 and 25 March 2026.
Israel is not the only foreign government that wanted American soldiers to do the fighting in Iran. The same week the Pentagon ordered the 82nd Airborne toward the region, the Times of Israel told its readers that Saudi Arabia's ruler wanted them on the ground.
What was reported
The Times of Israel's diplomatic reporter Lazar Berman, relaying the New York Times, wrote that bin Salman spoke with Trump several times that week, saw Iran as a threat as long as its current government exists, and wanted US strikes on Iran's energy system:
"He even advocated for US boots on the ground in order to take control of energy sites and topple the regime, they said."
(Times of Israel, 24 March 2026; article page). An X news summary attributed to the Times the line that bin Salman saw a "historic opportunity" to remake the Middle East and that "The US should consider putting troops in Iran to seize energy infrastructure and force the government out of power."
The next day London's Jewish Chronicle reported the same: "He reportedly advocated for Trump to follow through on his threat to strike Iranian power plants and even for US boots on the ground to help topple the regime." The Chronicle added that about 3,000 soldiers of the 82nd Airborne Division were being sent to support 3,000 to 5,000 Marines already dispatched, with more than 50,000 troops under Central Command, which "leaves open the possibility of American boots on the ground" (Jewish Chronicle, 25 March 2026; article page).
In public, Riyadh said it wanted a diplomatic solution.
Who lobbied for the war
A post summarizing Washington Post reporting said Trump launched the Iran strikes "after weeks of lobbying by Netanyahu and Saudi Crown Prince MBS," that "US intelligence saw no imminent threat," and that "Less than 48 hours earlier Netanyahu had called Trump with intelligence on Khamenei's location" (as posted on X, 28 March 2026). Two foreign leaders pressed for the war. One reportedly wanted American boots to seize oil fields; the other said "there has to be a ground component" and kept his own infantry home.
Why it belongs in this pattern
The pattern this section documents is not about one country's religion or people. It is about foreign governments, and the lobbies and officials who serve them, steering American soldiers into wars that serve those governments' regional aims. Israel's government is the most consistent and most documented case, and its long-held plans for the region are laid out in Greater Israel. The Saudi crown prince's reported request shows the same move from another capital: bomb, then ask the Americans to go in on the ground.
Status: Mohammed bin Salman is alive. Donald Trump is alive. Benjamin Netanyahu is alive. Lazar Berman is alive.
