Special Forces Inside Iran

Special forces are small, highly trained military units built for raids, rescues, sabotage, and work behind enemy lines: in the US, Navy SEALs, Army Rangers and Green Berets, Delta Force, and the Air Force pararescuers who reached the downed airman in April. They are the first ground troops any war uses and the last ones any government announces. When CENTCOM's commander called the April rescue the first "acknowledged" American boots on the ground in Iran in 46 years, the key word was "acknowledged."

This page gathers what the record shows about special forces and the Iran war: Israel's own teams inside Iran, the elite American units sent to the region to give "options for potential operations inside Iran," the staging of commando forces in Israel and neighboring states, and the long history of covert American teams in Iran reported before this war began.

Evidence rating: CONFIRMED that US special operations forces fought on Iranian soil in April 2026 (see the F-15E rescue). STRONG that elite US units were positioned for operations inside Iran (CBS as reported by FDD's Long War Journal; Hegseth's own refusal to say). MODERATE for reports of other covert teams, which rest on unnamed sources, as covert operations always do.

Israel's teams went in first

On 3 March 2026, the war's fourth day, Israel Hayom reported that IDF special forces and Mossad operatives had conducted a ground operation inside Iran (Israel Hayom, 3 March 2026). An analyst tracking the war noted the same day that Mossad's network inside Iran had been activated in June 2025, and quoted Mossad chief David Barnea: "We will continue to be there, like we have been there." He argued that Secretary of State Rubio's line that the US was "not currently postured for ground forces" said nothing about covert networks (@shanaka86 on X, 3 March 2026).

At the end of March an Israeli security official told Israel's public broadcaster that "the IDF is providing the US with intelligence ahead of a potential American ground operation in Iran" (as quoted by The War Reporter on X, 30 March 2026). Israel Hayom's reporting and Channel 12's were consistent: small Israeli teams and intelligence, American ground forces. See Israel keeps its infantry home.

Elite American units, for "operations inside Iran"

By the end of March, the units arriving in the region were not only Marines and paratroopers. Janatan Sayeh of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies' Long War Journal, summarizing CBS, wrote:

"CBS noted the same day that the growing presence of elite US units, including Navy SEALs and Army Rangers alongside Marines and airborne forces, is intended to give Washington flexible options for potential operations inside Iran."

(FDD's Long War Journal, 31 March 2026; article page.) The Washington Post's report of 28 March described "raids by a mixture of Special Operations forces and conventional infantry troops" (see Pentagon ground plans).

An analyst's summary of the force picture on 2 April: "Elements of the 82nd Airborne have deployed. Hundreds of JSOC operators are staging at bases in Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. Total regional presence exceeds 50,000 troops. No boots on Iranian soil." And: "the Kharg Island option is no longer a concept. It is a logistics package waiting for a signature" (@shanaka86 on X, 2 April 2026). JSOC is the Joint Special Operations Command, which runs the most secret American units. That is one analyst's account, not an official figure. The next day, an F-15E went down and those operators were in Iran.

The uranium mission is a special-forces mission

From the first week, the ground role most discussed in Washington was a raid to seize Iran's enriched uranium. NBC reported on 6 March that the President had shown "serious interest" in "a small contingent of U.S. troops that would be used for specific strategic purposes," such as securing uranium stockpiles (NBC News). Haaretz reported on 8 March that the US ambassador to the United Nations confirmed the United States has "troops and assets that are focused on seizing weapons of mass destruction if needed and if so ordered" (Haaretz, 8 March 2026). Netanyahu, on 60 Minutes in May: "You go in, and you take it out." See Kharg Island and the uranium raid.

Paratroopers sent to Israel

In June, reporter Ken Klippenstein reported, as summarized by FrameTheGlobeNews, that official Army deployment orders sent soldiers of the 82nd Airborne's 2nd Battalion, 501st Infantry Regiment to Israel on temporary duty while the public story named other posts in the region, and that "Sources familiar with military planning say this is tied to new joint U.S. and Israeli contingency plans finalized back in February, which reportedly map out ways to seize Kharg Island and establish a foothold on the Iranian coast" (FrameGlobeNews on X, 8 June 2026). If accurate, joint US-Israeli plans to put Americans on the Iranian coast were finished before the war began on 28 February. X's trending page had already carried a headline in March: "Leaked Order Reveals Secret U.S. Airborne Deployment to Israel" (X trending, 9 March 2026). We have the summary, not Klippenstein's article or the order itself.

What small teams could do, in an expert's words

Four days into the war, the Iran scholar Saeid Golkar was asked whether American and Israeli boots on the ground would be needed before Iranians could take over state buildings. His answer: "Not really. A few small groups of special forces could take control over a few buildings, for example, the presidential palace or the parliament or the TV station" (Moment, 3 March 2026; article page). That is how regime change on the ground is imagined by its supporters: not an army, but teams.

Claims made inside the war

  • On 26 March, a former US intelligence contractor wrote: "While there may be no confirmed public evidence that U.S. Special Forces units ... have already conducted ground insertions or are currently operating inside Iranian territory, my intel sources indicate U.S. Special Forces operations inside Iran are underway," naming JSOC, Delta, SEALs, the 75th Rangers, and the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Tony Seruga on X, 26 March 2026). CENTCOM had denied such claims. It is his claim, from unnamed sources.
  • In January 2026, before the war, a post relayed "Murmurs in the Iranian Groups" that Green Beret teams had "Infiltrated into Iran From the Iraq Borders," calling them rumors itself (@braddy_Codie05 on X, 9 January 2026).
  • After the April rescue, a critic wrote that "General Caine wanted to keep it secret that hundreds of special forces took part in operations inside Iran. Trump blurted it out anyway" (@Disinfo_Tracker on X, 6 April 2026).

The history: 2007 and 2008

The question is not new. In 2008 the investigative reporter Seymour Hersh wrote in The New Yorker that President George W. Bush had signed a secret finding for covert action against Iran worth, by the account the Jewish Telegraphic Agency summarized, about $400 million a year. The JTA quoted Hersh on what CIA Director Michael Hayden told Congress:

"Hayden reassured the legislators that the language did nothing more than provide authority for Special Forces operatives on the ground in Iran to shoot their way out if they faced capture or harm."

(Jewish Telegraphic Agency, 30 June 2008; article page.) One congressman wrote Bush that "no lethal action, period" had been authorized inside Iran. The JTA writer doubted Hersh's reading. A year earlier, Gen. Wesley Clark, the former NATO commander who described the Pentagon memo listing seven countries ending with Iran, had said of another Hersh report on Iran war planning: "It's certainly plausible" (Democracy Now, 2 March 2007). See the post-9/11 Pentagon country list.

What this teaches

  • Special forces are the ground war's first stage. Every reported 2026 plan, from the uranium raid to Kharg Island, begins with them.
  • "Acknowledged" is the operative word. The government acknowledged one ground operation in Iran, five months after it happened, on television. Covert teams are, by design, never acknowledged while they operate.
  • Israel and the United States planned it together. Israeli teams and intelligence inside Iran, American units staged in Israel, and, by Klippenstein's account, joint plans for the Iranian coast finished before the war.

Status: David Barnea is alive. Saeid Golkar is alive. Tony Seruga is alive. Ken Klippenstein is alive. Seymour Hersh is alive. Michael Hayden is alive. Wesley Clark is alive. Janatan Sayeh is alive.
