Right Troops, Wrong Place: Clips Relabeled as Americans in Iran
Evidence rating: CONFIRMED for each place identification below, which comes from a named fact-checker, a news organization, or geolocators with published coordinates.
Many of the clips shared as "Americans invading Iran" show real American troops. They were just filmed somewhere else: in California, in Nevada, in South Korea, in Afghanistan. That matters for two reasons. First, a reader who shares one of them hands every official an easy way to wave off the whole subject. Second, and more important, the real movements toward a ground war were happening at the same moment, in the Pentagon's own announcements, and they got less attention than the fakes. This page lists the relabeled clips and sets each one next to what was actually happening that week.

The two clips that tell the most
The HC-130J landing. X's own news summary called the "Ground Invasion coming" clip "old training footage from U.S. deserts." The same summary then said something the caption-writers missed: "It surfaced amid real U.S. losses on April 3, 2026: an F-15E shot down over Iran with one crew rescued and one missing, plus a recovered A-10 pilot. HC-130Js support ongoing combat search-and-rescue in Iran, providing refueling and medevac." The picture was wrong. American aircraft over Iran were real. The debunk and the reality sit in the same paragraph.
The Afghanistan clip. Posts attributed to commentator Ian Miles Cheong said the footage showed American air power "decimating" IRGC fighters trying to capture the downed pilot. Users recognized it as Afghanistan footage "from 17 years ago." At that moment, the real rescue was under way: the CENTCOM commander later said more than 90 U.S. service members were on the ground inside Iran. See the rescue page.
Americans filmed over Iran, not yet verified
Some clips of Americans in or over Iran have been neither confirmed nor debunked:
- "Crazy footage of Iranian police officers opening fire on U.S. Air Force HH-60G 'Pave Hawk' Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) Helicopters flying low Friday over Southern Iran, during the search for the crewmembers of an American F-15E Strike Eagle shot down by Iran" (OSINT767 on X, April 4, 2026). It fits the known rescue, but no one has geolocated it.
- Iran's Revolutionary Guard released a video on March 19 it said showed a missile targeting an American F-35 over Iran, after reports that an F-35 made an "emergency landing" at a regional base following hostile fire (OSINTdefender on X, March 19, 2026). Replies called the video AI; one noted that CNN's report of the damaged jet made the story "partially true" regardless.
How the checkers do it
PolitiFact's guide, quoting the Israeli analyst Tal Hagin: "If there are street or shop signs visible in the video, check Google Maps to see if such a location really exists." Take a screenshot, run a reverse-image search, and check whether the picture was online before February 2026 (PolitiFact, March 12, 2026). CTV's Deception Decoded added the simplest rule: "just wait a few minutes to see did anybody else record this event" (Deception Decoded, March 20, 2026). The same segment geolocated a driving video of ships exploding at the U.S. naval base in Bahrain and found "you really can't see the ships if you were driving by this base."
What this teaches
Every one of these clips was used to say "Americans are fighting in Iran," and every one was caught. That is good. But notice the right-hand column. While the internet argued about a 2023 flyover, the Pentagon was deploying the 82nd Airborne and thousands of Marines, drawing up plans to seize Kharg Island, and sending special operators onto Iranian soil. Fakes are loud. The real movements were announced quietly, in briefings and in newspaper reports. That is where to look: Official Briefings.
