March 2026: "There Has to Be a Ground Component" — and Whose It Would Be

Evidence rating: CONFIRMED for Netanyahu's words (India Today video transcript; Haaretz headline) and for the Times of Israel's April 1 report. MODERATE for the Channel 12 report as widely quoted on X (not confirmed on Channel 12's own site).

Three weeks into the joint U.S.–Israeli war, Israel's prime minister said on camera what an air war cannot do. Then Israel's own English-language press explained who would not be doing the rest.

March 19–20: the press conference

At a press conference for foreign media in Jerusalem, asked about regime change in Iran:

"It is often said that you can't win, you can't do revolutions from the air. That is true. You can't do it only from the air. You can do a lot of things from the air and we do but there have to be there has to be a ground component as well. There are many possibilities for this ground component and I take the liberty of not sharing with you all those possibilities." (India Today, March 20, 2026)

Haaretz's headline: "Netanyahu Says a Revolution in Iran Requires a Ground Offensive" (Haaretz, March 19, 2026).

The same day in Washington

President Trump: "I'm not putting troops anywhere." Then: "If I were, I certainly wouldn't tell you." A Reuters/Ipsos poll that week found 7 percent of Americans supported a large-scale ground invasion of Iran, 55 percent opposed sending any ground troops, and 65 percent believed Trump would order one anyway (Common Dreams, March 20, 2026). CBS reported that day that "Pentagon officials have made detailed preparations for deploying U.S. ground forces into Iran," and the Wall Street Journal that thousands more Marines were shipping out (see Pentagon Ground Plans).

April 1: the Times of Israel explains whose it would not be

Israel's leading English-language paper answered the question Netanyahu had declined to:

"As US weighs putting troops in Iran, realities on ground keep Israeli boots closer to home." (Times of Israel, April 1, 2026)

It noted that Netanyahu "hinted at the need for a ground operation earlier this month, saying, 'There has to be a ground component as well,' in order to bring about regime change — an unofficial goal of the war shared by both Israel and the US — while declining to elaborate on what that might entail."

Around the same time, Israel's Channel 12 was widely quoted on X: "Israeli soldiers will not take part in any potential US ground operation in Iran." That line reached tens of thousands of reposts; it was not confirmed on Channel 12's own site in this investigation's research.

Putting the pieces together

  • Israel's prime minister: a ground component is needed; he will not say whose.
  • Israel's English-language press: Israeli boots stay "closer to home."
  • The U.S. Pentagon, the same weeks: detailed preparations for U.S. ground forces, the 82nd Airborne deploying, weeks of ground raids planned.
  • The U.S. President, in July: "we have other people that will do the ground campaign for us."
  • The Jerusalem Post, in August: a ground campaign would need "between 750 thousand and 1.5 million American troops."

One observer posted two days after the press conference: "Netanyahu is sending American Soldiers to be inside Iran for battle while keeping his own Soldiers safe" (post on X, March 22, 2026). That is his opinion. The facts it rests on are the five lines above.

Iran's answer

Iranian officials heard the same thing. Within days their spokesmen were on camera: "Let them come, we are ready," and a promised "slaughterhouse for the Americans." They addressed their threats to Americans, not Israelis (see Iran Dares U.S. Ground Troops).

Status: Benjamin Netanyahu and Donald Trump are alive.
