Joe Kent: The Counterterrorism Chief Who Quit, and His Videos Against Boots on the Ground

Evidence rating: CONFIRMED for the resignation letter (published in full by the New York Times; reported by the Times of Israel and Axios) and for his March 30 video call to action (KOKH Fox 25). Later quotes from posts are marked.

Joe Kent was director of the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC), the government office that pulls together intelligence on terrorist threats to the United States. On March 17, 2026, less than three weeks into the war, he resigned and published his letter. It is the most senior resignation of the war, and it named Israel.

The letter

"I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran. Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby."

"I cannot support sending the next generation off to fight and die in a war that serves no benefit to the American people nor justifies the cost of American lives." (New York Times, letter in full)

The Times of Israel, an Israeli English-language newspaper, headlined it: "US counterterror official quits over Iran war, claims Israel tricked Trump into it" (Times of Israel, March 17, 2026). A summary by his critics described the letter as saying Trump "was duped by high-ranking Israeli officials and influential American media figures who ran a misinformation campaign to drag us into war" (Michael Rothman on X, March 19, 2026).

His phrase "sending the next generation off to fight and die" is the heart of this section. The official in charge of knowing what threatened America said Iran did not, and that the war's cost would be paid in American lives.

The White House answer

President Trump called Kent "a nice guy" but "weak on security" (Axios, March 17, 2026). Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, as summarized in the same post, "called his letter full of falsehoods and said the president views it as deeply unfortunate that someone given the privilege of serving this administration used government letterhead to accuse the president of being manipulated by a foreign government." Allies of the administration circulated a Fox News report that Kent "was a known leaker who was cut from presidential intelligence briefings months ago." None of these responses addressed his central claim about who pushed for the war; they addressed the man.

The videos: "Tell Trump: No boots on the ground"

Kent did not go quiet. On March 30, as the 82nd Airborne deployed and the Pentagon's ground plans were reported, he released a video urging Americans to call the White House. KOKH Fox 25 reported: "Joe Kent, the former National Counterterrorism Center director, on Monday put out a call to action where he urged Americans to call the White House and object to boots on the ground in Iran" (KOKH Fox 25, March 30, 2026). One post captioned the clip: "Joe Kent: 'Call the White House. Tell Trump: No boots on the ground in Iran.!'" (on X, March 30, 2026).

On August 21 he released another, as a post summarized it: urging Americans to contact the White House and officials, "saying they do not support putting U.S. boots on the ground in Iran. He says President Trump is under significant pressure. 'We do not support putting any boots on the ground in Iran'" (post with the video, August 21, 2026).

In September a post quoted him: "the narrative & agenda spun by a foreign government- Israel, won the argument & forced us into this war" (post on X, September 21, 2026); the underlying clip was not captured.

Citizens picked up the call. One widely shared post gave the numbers: "White House Comment Line: (202) 456-1111. Congress Switchboard: (202) 224-3121. Remember, soldiers can't speak for themselves. It's our duty and responsibility to speak for them" (post on X, March 30, 2026).

Why his resignation matters

Senior officials rarely quit during a war, and almost never say in writing that a foreign government pushed their country into it. Kent did both, and then spent the following months asking ordinary Americans to do the one thing he believed could still stop a ground war: call. That is the white horse in Plato's image (see the chariot allegory): the part of the soul that acts on honor, even at a cost.

Status: Joe Kent is alive. Donald Trump, Karoline Leavitt, and Michael Rothman are alive. The claims about Kent's conduct are the administration's and its allies'; this page makes no finding on them.
