Trump on Ground Troops, in His Own Words
Evidence rating: CONFIRMED for quotes taken from network video, transcripts, or major-outlet reports (marked). MODERATE where the only record is a post quoting a clip without naming the setting (marked).
Donald Trump campaigned on ending America's wars in the Middle East. This page collects, in date order, what he said on camera about sending American ground troops into Iran. Read in sequence, the words never quite say yes. They also never say no. And each time they stop short, the deployments and plans reported that same week go one step further (see Pentagon Ground Plans).
June 21, 2025: "a spectacular military success"
After B-2 bombers struck Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan, Trump addressed the nation: "Tonight, I can report to the world that the strikes were a spectacular military success." He thanked Israel's prime minister: "I want to thank and congratulate Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu," and "We worked as a team. Like perhaps no team has ever worked before" (ABC7 transcript; Miller Center). No ground troops were involved or mentioned.
February 28, 2026: "major combat operations in Iran"
On the first day of the second war: "The United States military began major combat operations in Iran" (as quoted by The ICIR on X, February 28, 2026). The next day, speaking of the first Americans killed: "Sadly, there will likely be more before it ends" (as posted by Occupy Democrats, March 1, 2026).
March 2: "I don't say it"
"I don't have the yips with respect to boots on the ground. Every president says, 'There will be no boots on the ground.' I don't say it." (Barron's, March 2, 2026)
The Deseret News later quoted the rest: "I say, 'probably don't need them' (or) 'if they were necessary'" (Deseret News, July 22, 2026). AFP summarized his New York Post interview that day: Trump "refused to rule out deploying US ground troops to Iran 'if they were necessary'" (AFP Fact Check, March 5, 2026).
March 7–9: "Possibly, for a very good reason," then "nowhere near"
- March 7, Air Force One. Asked about ground troops: "Could there be? Possibly, for a very good reason. Have to be a very good reason" (Poynter, March 11, 2026). A news brief added that he said Iran would be "so decimated" it could not fight on the ground (Apexguard on X, March 8, 2026).
- March 8–9, CBS Evening News, in one sentence: "President Trump says he is not ruling out sending American ground troops to Iran as the war enters a second week. The White House says there are no current plans to put boots on the ground in Iran" (CBS Evening News on X).
- March 9, New York Post. Trump said the U.S. is "nowhere near" sending ground forces to Iran, "even to secure nuclear materials at the damaged Isfahan facility," as X summarized the interview (X news summary, March 9, 2026).
March 16: "I don't want to say that"
On a call with PBS NewsHour's Liz Landers, asked whether U.S. troops will be on the ground in Iran: "I don't want to say that." Asked if his thinking had changed: "No, it's not changed, but I just don't want to talk about that, because I'm not gonna talk about strategy with a reporter. O.K.?" In the same call, on Kharg Island: "I told them openly — I'll knock the hell out of it" (PBS NewsHour on X, March 16, 2026).
March 19–20: "I'm not putting troops anywhere. If I were, I certainly wouldn't tell you"
"I'm not putting troops anywhere." Then: "If I were, I certainly wouldn't tell you." (Common Dreams, March 20, 2026)
One clip posted that day rendered it with a last word: "I'm not putting troops anywhere... yet" (post on X, March 20, 2026; not checked against a transcript). The same day, the Wall Street Journal reported that "The Pentagon is sending three warships and thousands of additional Marines to the Middle East, even as President Trump insists he won't put American boots on the ground in Iran" (Lara Seligman on X).
March 30: "I just have lots of alternatives," and "take the oil"
Asked about ground troops: "I just have lots of alternatives" (video posted on X, March 30, 2026). To the Financial Times, as a news brief quoted him: "To be honest with you, my favorite thing is to take the oil in Iran," naming Kharg Island, and "It would also mean we had to be there for a while" (Apexguard on X, March 30, 2026). Sky News's John Sparks: "It was just two weeks ago that he said he was not putting troops anywhere. This morning that's clearly not the case" (Sky News, March 30, 2026).
April 1–2: "back to the stone ages"
In an address, Trump promised to hit Iran "extremely hard over the next two to three weeks" and "bring them back to the stone ages where they belong." On Iran's oil: "We haven't hit their oil. But we could hit it, and it would be gone, and there's not a thing they could do about it" (Shanaka Anslem Perera on X; StockMarket.News on X, April 2, 2026). Two days later, American special operators went into Iran for the F-15E rescue; Trump posted "WE GOT HIM!"
May 1: Congress "never been sought"
As the War Powers Act's 60-day limit arrived on May 1, he said on video of congressional approval: "It's never been sought before.. Nobody's every got it before.. Nobody's ever sought it before.. Nobody's ever asked for it before.. It's never been used before.. Why should we be different?" (video post on X, May 1, 2026). Reuters reported he met the deadline by declaring hostilities "terminated" by a ceasefire, "despite continuing attacks and a blockade of Iranian ports." See War Powers on Camera.
May 20: "our planned military attack"
"I have been asked ... to hold off on our planned military attack of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which was scheduled for tomorrow," Trump wrote, as the Daily Mail reported it; Hegseth was told to stand ready for a "full, large-scale assault" if talks failed (Owen Gregorian on X, May 20, 2026).
June 11: "walk in there tomorrow"
Trump says a "small group" of U.S. soldiers could "walk in there tomorrow" and "take over all of Iran" — "if I wanted to." (Open Source Intel on X, June 11, 2026)
Rating: MODERATE (the setting of the clip is not named).
July: "other people that will do the ground campaign for us"
After strikes resumed on July 7, the White House told Congress they "involve no U.S. ground troops" (OAN on X, July 14, 2026). That week, according to the Wall Street Journal as quoted by the World Socialist Web Site, Trump told Fox:
"Sometimes you need a ground campaign, but we have other people that will do the ground campaign for us."
On seizing Kharg Island: "If we degrade them far enough and deep enough back, I would do that" (WSWS, July 16, 2026). Rating: MODERATE (secondhand). Who the "other people" would be, he did not say. Israel's government had already made clear its infantry would not be among them (see Netanyahu on Camera).
September 17: "Do I want to go in and annihilate them or do I not?"
To Axios, Trump said he was approaching "a major turning point in the war with Iran" and had "a big decision coming up": "Do I want to go in and annihilate them or do I not?" and "anything could happen with me" (as quoted on X, September 17, 2026).
What the words add up to
Set side by side, the President's statements form a pattern: never "no," never "yes," and each denial dated to the day it was said. "I don't say it." "Possibly." "Nowhere near." "I don't want to say that." "I'm not putting troops anywhere." "Lots of alternatives." "Walk in there tomorrow." "Other people ... will do the ground campaign." Meanwhile the Pentagon's plans grew from a small team to seize uranium to weeks of raids to thousands of troops storming nuclear sites. A parent does not need the President to say "yes." The options he refuses to close are the ones being built.
Status: Donald Trump is alive. Liz Landers and John Sparks are alive.
