"Deployment to Iran" Clips and the Draft Scare: Wrong About the Order, Right About the Machinery
Evidence rating: CONFIRMED that the FY2026 National Defense Authorization Act makes Selective Service registration automatic for men 18 to 26 starting December 18, 2026, and that Selective Service sought vendors in July 2026 for a draft-scenario computer simulation (both stated in the community note attached to the most viral draft post). CONFIRMED that the specific clips and screenshots below were mislabeled or fake.
A second family of viral videos did not show fighting at all. It showed soldiers on planes, convoys at night, and screenshots of the President announcing a ground invasion, and it asked the question every parent was asking: is a draft coming? The fact-checkers took these apart one by one. But look closely at what their own notes say, and the machinery the posts were afraid of turns out to be real.
The soldier on the plane (June 2025, and again in April 2026)
On June 22, 2025, the day of the first U.S. strikes, a post with more than 9,000 likes read: "U.S. SOLDIER POSTS VIDEO - 'DEPLOYMENT TO IRAN.' A U.S. Army soldier just filmed inside a military aircraft filled with troops, and tagged it #deployment and #war. He says they're heading to Iran." The day before, a post with 324,000 views said "Videos of American military personnel continue to go viral online, hinting at US involvement in ground operations against Iran. It seems it could be anytime now" (post on X, June 21, 2025).
Lead Stories found a key frame of the video on TikTok on June 17, before the strikes: "No, that's not true: The post provides no evidence where those soldiers are going, nor when." It added that "neither the White House nor Congress have announced U.S. troops will be sent to Iran" (Lead Stories, June 23, 2025; 26-second video).
On April 3, 2026, the day the F-15E was shot down, the same account posted a new clip: "An American soldier says they are being deployed to Iran on social media. It looks authentic" (as reposted, on X). No fact-check was found for that one. Within two days, about a hundred American service members were on the ground in Iran (the rescue).
The AI convoy and the AI "deployment"
A night video of soldiers and military vehicles in a city street, captioned "US soldiers are ready in Iran," spread from March 1–2, 2026 in English, Burmese and Hausa. AFP found Google's SynthID watermark and "emergency lights typically found on police cars and ambulances" on the "military" trucks (AFP Fact Check, March 5, 2026). MEAWW traced it to a Facebook channel that posts AI videos, "Daily mind_ai" (MEAWW, March 9, 2026). On April 1, The Independent flagged another: "This viral video claiming to show US military deployment to the Middle East is completely fake. It's not troops preparing for a ground invasion of Iran – instead, it is AI-generated footage" (The Independent via NewsBreak).
Read AFP's own page to the end, though. The same fact-check notes that Trump, in a March 2 New York Post interview, "refused to rule out deploying US ground troops to Iran 'if they were necessary,'" and that the White House said on March 4 that ground troops were "not part of the plan" "at this time." The video was fake. The option was on the table, by the President's own account.
The fake Trump announcement
In late March a screenshot with more than a million views claimed Trump had posted: "The United States will begin a major Ground Operation in Iran. It will be STRONG, PRECISE, and SUCCESSFUL. Our Great American Warriors will NEVER be denied. GOD BLESS AMERICA." MEAWW: "Fake, Trump made no such post" (MEAWW, March 30, 2026; Lead Stories on X). The same MEAWW page noted: "Officials said no final decision has been made regarding sending US ground troops into Iran." That week, the Pentagon confirmed that elements of the 82nd Airborne were deploying, and Axios reported options for a "final blow" that could include ground forces (see Pentagon ground plans).
"Trump Orders Pentagon To Prepare National Draft"
The biggest draft post of the war came from Alex Jones on July 28, 2026, with 1.58 million views:
"BREAKING: Trump Orders Pentagon To Prepare National Draft In Three Weeks As US Troops Mass For A Ground Invasion Of Iran! The Trump Admin's Selective Service System Published A Request Last Week Asking Vendors To Create A Computer Simulation, So The Agency Can Test Scenarios For A National Military Draft!" (Alex Jones on X, July 28, 2026)
X's community note answered it:
"Selective Service seeks vendors for a draft scenario simulation (proposals due Aug. 14) ahead of auto-registration Dec. 2026. No evidence Trump ordered a national draft prep. Drafts need Congress. Age 42 change is for voluntary Army enlistment only."
Read that note as a list of facts, not as a rebuttal. It confirms that the Selective Service System asked contractors to build a computer simulation of draft scenarios, with proposals due August 14, 2026. It confirms that automatic registration begins in December 2026. What it denies is only that Trump personally "ordered" a draft. The machinery the post was afraid of is real and on schedule; the order to use it is the part that has not been given. Another account summarized the same request as asking "for computer simulations of national draft activation scenarios with a 3-week completion deadline — the timing overlaps White House meetings about Iran ground troops and the automatic-registration rule effective December 18" (TheFoilWire on X, July 29, 2026).
The law itself: X's news summary on March 12 reported that "President Trump signed the Fiscal Year 2026 NDAA on December 18, 2025, directing automatic registration of males aged 18-26 via Social Security and DMV data starting December 18, 2026," and that this "does not reinstate a draft, which would need separate approval" (X news summary, March 12, 2026). A broadcast that week was titled "As Iran War Escalates, Congress Passes Automatic Involuntary Draft Registration." The data-matching side is covered in Automatic Registration and Data Matching and the simulation in the draft wargame page.
What the fact-checkers said about the draft
- PolitiFact, March 9: a draft needs a new act of Congress; the U.S. has had an all-volunteer force since 1973 (PolitiFact).
- Task & Purpose, March 10: "It only took 2 weeks for the Iran war to cause a draft scare," and "It's very unlikely" (Task & Purpose).
- The Washington Times, April 11: "only Congress can authorize the president to enlist people into the military" (on X).
All true. And none of them answers the question a parent actually has, which is not "has Congress voted a draft today?" but "is the government building what it would need to run one fast?" On that question the record says: automatic registration from every 18-year-old's Social Security and driver's-license data, a contract for draft-activation simulations, an enlistment age raised to 42, and a Press Secretary who, asked about mothers' fear of a draft, said the President "wisely keeps his options on the table" (see Leavitt and the draft question).
It has happened before
In January 2020, after the U.S. killed Iranian general Qassem Soleimani, fake text messages told Americans they had been drafted. NPR reported: "The U.S. Army wants Americans to know they have not been selected for a military draft after a slew of text messages falsely told people that they'd been called to war in Iran." The Selective Service website crashed from traffic (PolitiFact, January 6, 2020). The difference in 2026 is that the registration system itself is being rebuilt while the war is on.
What this teaches
The panic posts got the headline wrong: no one has been drafted, and the President has not ordered a draft. But every time a fact-checker wrote "drafts need Congress," the same page, read closely, recorded another piece of the system being put in place. A parent who stops at "debunked" misses the paragraph that matters.
Status: Alex Jones and Donald Trump are alive.
