Signals of a Draft: How the Government Keeps It on the Table
Evidence rating: CONFIRMED that the White House, asked directly about a draft for the Iran war, said it is "not part of the current plan right now" and refused to rule it out. CONFIRMED that the Jerusalem Post, Israel's leading English-language daily, published a column proposing debt relief to recruit the 750,000 to 1.5 million Americans it says a ground war on Iranian soil would need. STRONG for the Pentagon's 2026 mobilization preparations, reported by several outlets.
No induction order has been issued, and the President cannot issue one alone. But a government that intends to rule something out says "no." This one, asked on camera by an anchor speaking for worried mothers, said "not part of the current plan right now." Around that answer sit a list being made automatic, a mobilization exercise, ground-troop talk from the chair of the military personnel subcommittee, and public calls for mandatory service. This page gathers the signals in one place.
The question a mother would ask, and the answer
On Sunday, March 8, 2026, Fox News anchor Maria Bartiromo put the question to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. Responsible Statecraft transcribed it:
Bartiromo: "Mothers out there are worried that we're going to have a draft, that they're going to see their sons and daughters get involved in this. What do you want to say about the President's plans for troops on the ground?"
Leavitt: "President Trump wisely does not remove options off of the table. It's not part of the current plan right now, but the president, again, wisely keeps his options on the table."
PolitiFact, reviewing the exchange the next day, printed a fuller version: "It has been, and it will continue to be, and President Trump, wisely, does not remove options off of the table. I know a lot of politicians like to do that quickly, but the president, as commander in chief, wants to continue to assess the success of this military operation. It's not part of the current plan right now, but the president, again, wisely keeps his options on the table." PolitiFact added that "Leavitt did not propose a draft but rather declined to remove future options from consideration," and that "the White House referred PolitiFact to Leavitt's full statement" when asked to clarify.
The question was about a draft, and the answer did not say no. The full exchange, and why "not now" is different from "no," is on The White House Answer.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, asked on CBS's 60 Minutes about U.S. forces inside Iran, said the U.S. currently did not have them, then added "We reserve the right," and: "you don't tell the enemy, you don't tell the press, you don't tell anybody what your limits would be on an operation," as Military.com reported on March 9, 2026.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, the day after the House rejected a war-powers resolution, told reporters: "We are not at war. We have no intention of being at war. This is a limited operation" (BBC, March 6, 2026). The war was then a week old.
The same President used the draft as a warning in 2024, attacking his opponent: "She wants to bring back the draft, and draft your child, and put them in a war that should never have happened," and, at an Atlanta rally, "All of your sons and daughters will end up getting a draft notice," as quoted in a Readers Supported News reprint of April 9, 2026.
The day before, March 7, 2026, President Trump was asked on Air Force One about ground troops in Iran. PolitiFact quotes his answer: "Could there be? Possibly, for a very good reason. Have to be a very good reason."
Later words from the President
In May 2026, a clip posted by the account OSINTtechnical shows the President saying about Iran: "We don't want to go in and kill people, really don't. I don't want to, I don't want to, it's too tough." And: "I don't like that. You lose people, it's so unnecessary." (OSINTtechnical on X). Reluctance about casualties is not a commitment against a draft.
The agency and the Pentagon are preparing
- Silence from the draft agency. Edward Hasbrouck wrote in July that the Selective Service "has maintained radio silence since the 'automatic' registration law was enacted, not issuing any statements or responding to any inquiries from journalists for more than six months" (Responsible Statecraft, July 8, 2026). In the same weeks it asked contractors to simulate a national mobilization.
- Why keeping the option matters. Hasbrouck: "Perceived or pretended availability of a draft as a 'fallback' enhances the ability of U.S. war planners and policy makers to threaten or commit the country to larger, longer, less popular wars" (Responsible Statecraft, March 10, 2026).
- Mobilization steps. The Individual Ready Reserve reportedly redesignated a primary "mobilization asset"; a congressionally directed mass mobilization exercise, the first since 1978 (as reported). See Pentagon Mobilization Preparations.
Who is openly talking about ground troops or compulsion
- Ground troops, from the chair of the personnel subcommittee. Rep. Pat Fallon (R-Texas), who chairs the House Armed Services subcommittee on military personnel, said on April 6, 2026 that he sees U.S. ground troops going into Iran: "I just don't see any other way." His reasoning: "80% of Iranians hate this regime. Once that action is taken, people are gonna rise up and the IRGC is gonna melt away." The poster who shared the clip added: "That's word for word what they said about Iraq in 2003" (DD Geopolitics on X). The man who oversees military manpower in the House sees no way but ground troops.
- Ground-raid planning. An X news summary of March 29, 2026, citing the Washington Post, said Pentagon planners were considering "weeks-long ground raids in Iran, including special forces targeting Kharg Island," pending the President's approval, while units such as the 82nd Airborne deployed to the region (X trend summary). A March 25 summary said Republican chairs of the Armed Services Committees were hinting a ground operation was planned (X trend summary). The detailed reporting is on US troops on the ground in Iran: the articles.
- A war authorization that limits ground troops. A group of Senate Republicans was reported in May to be drafting an authorization for force that "would likely restrict ground troops and set a limited window for hostilities" (Open Source Intel on X, May 4, 2026). On May 21, reporter Scott MacFarlane posted video of Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) reacting "when GOP pulled an Iran War authorization vote off the schedule" (MacFarlane on X). No authorization has passed.
- A defense company and a governor on mandatory service. An X news summary of May 7, 2026 said Palantir, whose software is used by the Pentagon, "urged the U.S. government to reinstate the military draft as part of a 22-point manifesto," citing Newsweek and the New York Post (X trend summary). Podcaster Joe Rogan answered, as one account quotes him: "I don't understand why anybody would wanna support that… That sounds crazy. Especially after this Iran war" (post). In March, California Gov. Gavin Newsom told Politico, as the California Post reported: "I think we have to look at ways we can frame a responsibility to serve for a year, 6 months minimum - year, 18 months." His office "declined to provide clarification," (post quoting the California Post). See Voices for Mandatory Service.
- Commentators who read the signals. On March 8, 2026, David Pyne posted to about 548,000 viewers that "The White House is now considering restoring the draft ... including a full-scale invasion of Iran with 500,000 troops" (Pyne on X). That is his reading; he cited no document.
Iranian officials have made their own bet about American volunteers. A spokesman for Iran's armed forces said on April 2, 2026: "In the ground operation, we will create a slaughterhouse for the Americans to instill such fear that for several future generations, Americans will not volunteer to join the army" (Disclose.tv on X). In September, Iran's security council secretary Mohsen Rezaee dared: "Why do the U.S. ground forces not enter Iran? Why do they only bomb from the sky and then leave?" (Clash Report on X).
What parents and members of Congress are saying
- A mother, on the first day of the war, February 28, 2026: "My 18 year old literally just signed up for his mandatory selective service last week, and I don't want him going to Iran" (post).
- Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), March 22, 2026: "Lindsey Graham has one foreign policy: send someone else's kids to war. He was wrong about Iraq. He was wrong about Afghanistan. Now he's wrong about Iran" (Mace on X). In July she polled her followers on troops on the ground; her September vote to end the war is on the war-powers page.
- Rep. Greg Casar (D-Texas): "My entire adult life, politicians have been sending other people's kids — our U.S. troops — to die in reckless, endless wars. Enough" (Casar on X).
- A third-generation Marine told Iran's state broadcaster Press TV: "I will not let my kids join [the US military] because of the way that we went to war with Iran" (Press TV on X, March 27, 2026). Press TV is an Iranian government outlet; the speaker is not named.
- An account called Senex claimed in August "a surge of online discussion among millennial parents who are making it clear they do not want their children enlisting" (post). It gave no numbers.
PBS reported in early March that a majority of Americans opposed military action in Iran (PBS headline), and an X news summary of March 29 cited "62% of Americans strongly oppose ground troops."
An Israeli newspaper counts the Americans needed
A draft is the hard form of compulsion. The softer form is making the alternative worse, or the reward bigger. Critics call this an "economic draft."
On August 30, 2026, the Jerusalem Post ran an opinion column by analyst AJ Jaff, "The war with Iran will not be won through airstrikes, so what's left?". It says: "Estimates for a successful ground campaign against Iran's 31 provincial commands... run between 750 thousand and 1.5 million American troops," and proposes federal debt forgiveness for Americans who enlist to fill those ranks. The column and its numbers are covered in full in The Jerusalem Post column on a million US troops. The author and Iran's government then described it this way:
- The author, posting as AJ Signal on X on September 15, 2026, wrote: "I had written an article on the @Jerusalem_Post that went viral on @X and other news media outlets in which I articulated that the Pentagon would likely need somewhere around 750,000 to 1,500,000 American soldiers (or mercenaries) to launch its next phase which would likely be a ground invasion by Q3 2027."
- Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei pointed to the column, according to a September 4, 2026 post by The Iranian Letter, which says he described it as a proposal to use "student-loan and credit-card debt relief as an incentive for Americans to enlist," and said Americans' children would become "cannon fodder." That is an adversary government's framing, reported secondhand.
It is the clearest example in our captures of the Israeli press openly discussing how to get large numbers of Americans into uniform for Iran. The debt-relief mechanism is on The Debt-Relief Enlistment Proposal. The broader coverage of that theme is in American Soldiers on the Ground in Iran: Articles.

What a citizen can check
- Watch the full Leavitt interview and the PolitiFact write-up, and decide whether "not part of the current plan right now" reassures you.
- When a White House official is asked about the draft, listen for whether the answer is "no" or "not now."
- Watch for any request from the Pentagon or Selective Service to Congress for induction authority. That would come before any draft.
