Voices for Mandatory Service: Palantir's CEO, a Governor, and the People Asking for a Draft
Evidence rating: STRONG that Palantir CEO Alex Karp has called himself "pro draft" and that his company's 2026 manifesto urged a return to mandated service, as reported by the New York Post and Newsweek and discussed publicly by Joe Rogan. CONFIRMED for Gov. Gavin Newsom's quoted words, from a published interview. We did not read Palantir's manifesto itself.
No member of Congress in our research has introduced a bill to draft Americans for Iran. But the idea of compulsory service is being argued openly, by people with influence over defense technology and presidential politics.
Alex Karp and Palantir
Palantir's software is used by the Pentagon, and critics tie its tools to the federal databases the new registration system will draw on (see Palantir, DOGE, and Pentagon Databases).
In a profile posted in August 2024, before the Iran war, Karp was quoted saying the United States is "very likely" to end up in "a three-front war with China, Russia and Iran." In the same interview: "He said he would support class-based affirmative action and declared himself 'pro draft.' 'I think part of the reason we have a massive cleavage in our culture is, at the end of the day, by and large, only people who are middle- and working-class do all the fighting,' he said" (profile excerpt posted on X, August 17, 2024).
In May 2026, as the war entered its third month, an X news summary reported: "Palantir Technologies, urged the U.S. government to reinstate the military draft as part of a 22-point manifesto regarding the future of warfare and national security," citing Newsweek and the New York Post (X trend summary, May 7, 2026). An AI summary in September: "Palantir recent manifesto backs shifting from all-volunteer to universal/mandated service" (Grok on X, September 21, 2026).
Joe Rogan answered on his podcast, as one account quotes him: "Fck you, you go ... I don't understand why anybody would wanna support that… That sounds crazy. Especially after this Iran war, where everybody's like why the fck are we in Iran?" and "How 'bout let's figure out a way to use your technology so there's no more wars? Wouldn't that be a better goal?" (Never Forgotten on X, May 14, 2026).
The same retired Army sergeant who quoted Rogan asked what a data company's involvement means for fairness: "I wonder if a true 'lottery' will be used if it does get activated? Or a digital AI assisted 'lottery' using all public datasets to ensure the best of the best are selected or the Elites with connections are NOT selected?"
Gov. Gavin Newsom: "a responsibility to serve"
In a taped interview at John's Grill in San Francisco, Politico's Jonathan Martin asked California Gov. Gavin Newsom whether the country should adopt compulsory military service or some form of service obligation. Newsom: "I think we have to look at ways we can frame a responsibility to serve for a year, 6 months minimum - year, 18 months." And: "This notion of shared experiences - I don't know how else you get this country back together." His office "declined to provide clarification," and the report said he "did not outline a specific proposal or limit the idea to military service alone" (California Post excerpt, as posted March 27, 2026). The report added that his remarks "could become a focal point of a campaign and carry more weight amid rising tensions involving Israel and Iran."
The candidate in Massie's race
A snippet on an X search page, captured without a post id or date, attributed to "THOMAS MASSIE'S OPPONENT" the line "We're running out of time and need to implement selective service now." We could not open the original post and do not attribute it further. A voter asked in May 2026 whether Massie's challenger, Ed Gallrein, believes "we need a an involuntary draft"; the clip he pointed to shows Gallrein calling Iran "one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse," not a draft statement (Ray Waters on X, May 20, 2026). See Thomas Massie.
Citizens asking for a draft
Some Americans want one. "Why won't congress and the Trump Administration enforce a Draft to pick U.S. Citizens capable of fighting for American deployment to Iran?" one woman asked, linking the Selective Service site (Julia Miller on X, August 11, 2026). A MAGA supporter proposed going further than the law: "why not require all 18 year olds to serve for 2 years. Males and females ... Many parents of daughters would not agree" (post, April 9, 2026). Another wrote that "kids should all go to boot camp & serve in military for one term as a pre college requirement" (post, September 23, 2026). A veteran who served six combat rotations wrote: "I would re-up if I could to accomplish it" (post, September 24, 2026).
Why this matters
A draft does not need a new idea. It needs a constituency. The machinery is in law or in motion (see The Compulsion Machinery); what has held it back since 1973 is that no powerful voice wanted to be the one to ask. In 2026, the CEO of a major Pentagon software contractor and a likely presidential candidate have both spoken in favor of compulsory service. The people who would be compelled were not asked.
Status: Alex Karp, Joe Rogan, Gavin Newsom, Jonathan Martin, Ed Gallrein, and Julia Miller are alive.
