Sen. John Fetterman: The Democrat Whose Vote Kept the War Going

Evidence rating: CONFIRMED for his votes, from the Senate roll calls. STRONG for his statements, from the New York Times as quoted and from a Fox News interview as transcribed by a supporter.

This page is under "members who opposed" because it shows what opposition was up against. John Fetterman, a Pennsylvania Democrat, voted against every Iran war-powers resolution we found. On September 24, 2026 his vote was the difference.

The record

  • June 27, 2025. The only Democrat to vote against Sen. Kaine's S.J.Res. 59; it failed 47 to 53 (Senate vote 328).
  • March 4, 2026. The only Democrat voting no on S.J.Res. 104, 47 to 53 (Senate vote 46).
  • April 2026. "Fetterman (PA) is the only Democrat voting no," a reporter wrote (DannyKPolitics on X).
  • May 19 and June 23, 2026. He voted no when the Senate advanced S.J.Res. 185 (50 to 47) and when it adopted H.Con.Res. 86 (50 to 48).
  • September 24, 2026. H.Con.Res. 89 failed 49 to 50 (Senate vote 244). "JOHN FETTERMAN WAS THE ONLY DEMOCRAT TO OPPOSE THE MEASURE, WHICH WOULD HAVE REQUIRED CONGRESSIONAL AUTHORIZATION FOR U.S. MILITARY HOSTILITIES AGAINST IRAN" (First Squawk on X). The Darya Desk: "Congress was one vote from telling the president to get out of Iran, and that vote belonged to a Democrat ... Had he flipped, it would have passed 50 to 49" (Darya Desk on X).

In his words

After the June 2025 vote, as the New York Times quoted him, he voted no "simply because I would never want to restrict any future president, Republican or Democrat, to do this kind of military exercise." The Times noted he "has frequently broken ranks with his party on issues involving Israel" (NYT excerpt on Reddit).

In April 2026, on a Fox News program, as transcribed by a supporter (M.A. Rothman on X, April 10, 2026):

"AS A DEMOCRAT, I SUPPORTED WHAT PRESIDENT TRUMP DID TO CALL IRAN ACCOUNTABLE. I'LL BE THE ONLY DEMOCRAT THAT SUPPORTS THIS."

"What our military has accomplished is profound and significant and important. It has effectively destroyed its capabilities and destroyed its Navy, and they really haven't been able to really put a glove on us through this entire epic fury campaign."

"Every single Democrat running for president and every single Democrat in the Senate said we can never allow them to acquire a nuclear weapon. And now if you want to talk about a war crime, Iran is a 47-year-old war crime."

"I'm old enough to remember we used to root for our military, and we would all agree that Iran is the world's leading terrorism underwriter ... They have killed thousands of Americans over the near five decades. That's why I'll be the only Democrat that supports this."

What it shows

Fetterman's reason, "I would never want to restrict any future president," is the argument that makes a forced draft possible: a President who can start and continue a war without Congress can grow it until it needs conscripts. One vote in one chamber, cast by a member of the party that opposed the war, kept that power intact in September 2026.

Status: Alive. M.A. Rothman is alive.
