Sen. Rand Paul: "If They Can Draft You, They Own You"
Evidence rating: CONFIRMED for his votes and his repeal bill, from the Senate roll calls and Congress.gov. MODERATE for his quoted words on the draft, which come from a writer's report as reposted; we did not find the original interview.
Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican, is the only senator who has fought on both fronts this section covers: he voted to end the Iran war on every Senate roll call we found, and he co-wrote the bill to abolish the draft system entirely.
Every war-powers vote
Paul was the only Republican to vote for Sen. Tim Kaine's resolution on June 27, 2025 (Senate vote 328). On March 4, 2026, he was again the lone Republican yes (Senate vote 46). In April 2026 a reporter wrote that "Paul (KY) is the only Republican who has voted yes on every WPR resolution" (DannyKPolitics on X). He voted yes on the Senate's adoption of H.Con.Res. 86 on June 23, 2026 and on H.Con.Res. 89 on September 24, 2026. An AI summary in September: "Sen. Rand Paul said it should never have begun" (Grok on X, September 23, 2026).
An AI summary in June 2025 put his pro-Israel PAC receipts at "about $6,000 ..., a small amount compared to other senators," and noted he had opposed AIPAC and "blocking aid to Israel in 2018" (Grok on X, June 29, 2025). Those figures are the summary's, from public FEC data.
The draft: repeal, not reform
On May 14, 2026, Paul joined Sens. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) on S. 4537, "A bill to repeal the Military Selective Service Act" (Congress.gov). It has also been offered as Senate Amendment 6151 to the FY2027 defense bill, S. 4784 (Hasbrouck transition page). A post praising "@RandPaul" for "a bipartisan bill to end the Selective Service" drew more than 10,000 likes, according to an X search snippet in our captures. See Bills to Abolish Selective Service.
He voted no on the FY2026 defense bill that made registration automatic; he and Mike Lee were the two Republicans among the 20 no votes on December 17, 2025 (Senate vote 648).
His principle, as writer Leo Hohmann quoted him in a piece reposted in March 2026: "If they can draft you, they own you," and "Tyrants need slaves." The same repost asked readers: "Who owns you? Who owns your child or grandchild?" (post quoting Hohmann, March 12, 2026).
In 2019, he joined Sens. Tom Udall, Dick Durbin, and Elizabeth Warren on a bill "to prohibit funds for a war against Iran without congressional approval," according to a report at the time (Jack Hunter on X, May 15, 2019).
Why he matters
Paul's record joins the two halves of this section. The war-powers votes are about whether Congress will stop a war it never authorized. The repeal bill is about whether the machinery to fill that war with conscripts should exist at all. He has said no to both, consistently, and from inside the President's party.
Status: Alive. Also alive: Ron Wyden, Cynthia Lummis, Mike Lee, Dick Durbin, Elizabeth Warren, and Leo Hohmann.
