Debt Relief for Enlistment: The Jerusalem Post's Plan to Fill a Ground War, and the "Economic Draft"
Evidence rating: CONFIRMED that the Jerusalem Post published an opinion column on August 30, 2026 estimating 750,000 to 1.5 million American troops for an Iran ground campaign and proposing debt forgiveness to recruit them. STRONG for the reactions below, from the author's own posts and reports of Iran's Foreign Ministry statement.
A draft compels by law. An "economic draft" compels by need: it makes enlisting the way out of debt. In the middle of this war, an Israeli newspaper published a plan to do exactly that for a ground war in Iran.
The column
On August 30, 2026, the Jerusalem Post, Israel's oldest English-language daily, ran an opinion column by analyst AJ Jaff, "The war with Iran will not be won through airstrikes, so what's left?" It says: "Estimates for a successful ground campaign against Iran's 31 provincial commands and its Mosaic Defense Doctrine run between 750 thousand and 1.5 million American troops." And: "A federally administered debt-forgiveness enlistment program that fully discharges student loan, credit card, and loan balances after 24 or 36 months of service, and extends the GI Bill, would produce voluntary enlistment at scale" (Jerusalem Post). The full column, the author's background, and the coverage it drew are on The Jerusalem Post Column.
An AI summary two days later: "It proposes a federal debt-forgiveness enlistment program (discharging student/credit/auto loans after 24-36 months of service) to recruit the 750k-1.5M troops estimated needed for a ground invasion of Iran, given current Army strength of ~452k. CENTCOM did email analysts in late July 2026 seeking 'creative and unconventional ways to pressure and punish Iran.' This is the author's proposed response to that request" (Grok on X, September 1, 2026).
The author, in his own words
On September 15, 2026, the author, posting as AJ Signal, described his column: "I had written an article on the @Jerusalem_Post that went viral on @X and other news media outlets in which I articulated that the Pentagon would likely need somewhere around 750,000 to 1,500,000 American soldiers (or mercenaries) to launch its next phase which would likely be a ground invasion by Q3 2027. Iran's Foreign Ministry responded to my article directly in a public statement as did the @WhiteHouse." He told Americans: "The ONLY people in denial of what is coming to the military aged AMERICANS are AMERICANS themselves" (AJ Signal on X). Earlier, in June, he had told parents: "Make plans for your sons" (AJ Signal on X, June 4, 2026).
How others read it
- Iran's Foreign Ministry. Spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei pointed to the column, as a Middle East news account relayed on September 4, 2026, describing it as using "student-loan and credit-card debt relief as an incentive for Americans to enlist and fight in the war with Iran," and arguing that Americans would pay "the bill" through their taxes while their children become what he calls "cannon fodder" for a war they never chose (The Iranian Letter on X). That is an adversary government's framing, secondhand.
- An American reader. "JPost ran a white paper about how debt slavery can be used to force men into the military to fight in Iran" (Kay on X, September 22, 2026). It was an opinion column, not a white paper, and its word was "voluntary"; the reader's word "force" is her reading of what debt does to a young person's choice.
The economic draft, already running
Americans on the left and right have long said the volunteer force is partly a draft by other means.
- "We already have an economic draft, this version is simply more egregiously obvious," one poster wrote, arguing that the wealthy do not want a universal draft because "Neither the rich, nor even the middle class, would tolerate having their sons (or daughters) being sent to fight in Iran" (post, September 3, 2026).
- "For many the military is a way to achieve middle class. However, becoming a weekend warrior, earning a small amount of extra money each month ... certainly isn't worth your life?" (Jacob Weiss on X, September 19, 2026).
- "When forced into the decision to quit, lose income, not be able to pay the mortgage, the car payment, feed the kids, lose medical benefits, lose retirement, most folks will tough it out to provide for their family ... It becomes extortion" (@loretta0893 on X, September 19, 2026; post id not captured).
- A 2012 forum answer, long before this war: "We have been staging invasions since 1983 without a draft. Maintaining a scarce and low paying job market for the working class insures military enrollment" (archived forum).
- Palantir's CEO put the class point from the other side in 2024: "only people who are middle- and working-class do all the fighting," which is why he said he is "pro draft" (profile excerpt).
Why an Israeli newspaper matters here
This investigation's narrative is that Israeli voices openly want American soldiers, hundreds of thousands to a million, fighting on Iranian soil, while Israel does not send its own infantry. The Jerusalem Post column is the clearest case in our records: an Israeli newspaper printing a plan for the number of Americans needed and a mechanism to recruit them. Whether the author speaks for any government is a separate question; the paper chose to publish it. See Israel Will Not Send Infantry.
