The Enlistment Age Goes to 42: Widening the Pool One Week After the Blockade
Evidence rating: CONFIRMED that the Army raised its maximum age for voluntary enlistment from 35 to 42, effective April 20, 2026, and eased some marijuana waivers (Army Times). STRONG that the Army last used a 42 ceiling during the Iraq war, in 2006, and lowered it in 2016 (summary of ABC News reporting).
What changed
The Army raised the maximum age for voluntary enlistment from 35 to 42, effective April 20, 2026, and dropped the moral-waiver requirement for a single past marijuana-possession conviction (Army Times, March 25, 2026). The change aligned the Army with the Air Force, Space Force, and Coast Guard, according to a September summary of ABC News reporting (The World Correspondent on X). One analyst cited Army Regulation 601-210 as the vehicle (AJ Signal on X, June 5, 2026).
It is not a draft age. Registration still covers men 18 to 26, and a restored draft would reach men 18.5 to 26. An X community note on a viral post said so plainly: "Age 42 change is for voluntary Army enlistment only" (note on Alex Jones's post, July 28, 2026).
Why it matters anyway
It was done before, in the last big ground war. "The last time the Army temporarily raised the limit to 42 was 2006, during the Iraq War; it was lowered back to 35 in 2016." ABC's sources said the 2026 change "had been in preparation for months and was not related to the current war with Iran," reflecting "persistent recruiting shortfalls"; "only about 23% of Americans aged 17-24 are eligible to serve without a waiver," and the average recruit age "has risen from 21 in 2010 to nearly 23 in 2025" (The World Correspondent).
The timing. The naval blockade of Iranian ports began April 13, 2026. "On April 20, 2026, ONE WEEK after the blockade was imposed, the US Army raised its maximum enlistment age from 35 to 42 ... You do NOT raise the enlistment age to 42 unless the 18-to-35 cohort is no longer sufficient for what you are planning to do" (AJ Signal). A Canadian commentator saw the same thing in March: "With the U.S. raising the enlistment age from 34 to 42 and no longer caring if recruits are stoned ... the concern is shifting toward the draft, especially after automatic Selective Service registration became law in December 2025" (Canadian Prepper on X, March 24, 2026).
The recruiters' view. An NPR report in April, as quoted on air, described "a growing number of service members choosing to retire early, declining to re-enlist, or walking away from their contracts." A soldier quoted on the same X summary said a recruiter friend called enlistment "slow as hell" and "They raised the age up to 42" (X trend summary, April 11, 2026). The Army says it met its 2025 goal of 61,000 recruits four months early (Yahoo, March 31, 2026). Both can be true: a force that fills peacetime quotas can still be too small for a ground war the size planners describe; see The 193-Day Clock.
The confusion, and what it reveals
On ABC's The View on April 20, 2026, co-host Sara Haines said of the draft age, "I think it's 42," which mixed up the two rules (Nicholas Fondacaro on X). A July post claimed "18-42 yrs old are eligible" and that "Draft notices will start going out after the midterm elections" (post, July 15, 2026). Those are wrong about the law. What they sensed is right: every age limit that governs who can be put in uniform has moved in one direction in 2026.
Status: Sara Haines is alive.
