What Data-Driven Draft Enforcement Looks Like: Israel's Own Draft

Evidence rating: CONFIRMED for the Israeli facts below, from the Times of Israel and the Jerusalem Post. STRONG for this page's lessons: once a state has the complete list, it enforces a draft through benefits, data links, and the police stop; and the same Israeli government that struggles to draft its own refusers is waging a war whose supporters want American soldiers on the ground.

Why look at Israel

Israel is the country at the center of the war with Iran, and it runs a working draft today. Israel conscripts both men and women (National Coalition for Men release, December 2025). Analyst Anatoly Karlin: "Israel uses conscripts in all its wars" (@akarlin, April 19, 2026). And in 2026 it is fighting its own resistance problem in public: tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) men ignoring draft orders. Israeli newspapers report the tools in detail: court orders, loss of benefits, and police detention. That gives Americans a concrete picture of what enforcement looks like once a government has a complete list, which is exactly what automatic registration gives the United States on December 18, 2026.

A note on who is who: this page is about the Israeli state and its government's enforcement. The men resisting the draft in Israel are Israeli citizens, most of them religious Jews, resisting their own government. The investigation's subject is state power, not any people or faith.

The scale of refusal

The Times of Israel reported on April 26, 2026 that "over 79,000 conscription orders have been issued to ultra-Orthodox men" since the High Court ruled in 2024 that they must serve, and "only 2,100 have enlisted." In August, Israel's attorney general said about 50,000 of roughly 60,000 declared draft evaders are ultra-Orthodox, and that "it is necessary to expand the basket of personal economic enforcement measures as soon as possible."

The tools: benefits, data, and the police stop

In April 2026 the High Court ordered the government to tie discounts on buying a first home, daycare subsidies, after-school subsidies, and possibly transit and municipal tax discounts to draft status. In May, police announced that an officer who encounters a draft evader "will detain the deserter, report to the Military Police and wait with the detainee until the arrival of a representative of the Military Police, who is required to arrive within 30 minutes." To do either, every benefit office and every patrol officer needs to check draft status: a data link between the military and civilian government.

Open resistance, and the police line

In June 2026, Haredi protesters "blocked highways and railways for hours" in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and Ramat Gan, under the slogan "We will die and not enlist." Israel Police said it "permits protests as long as they are held within the framework of the law," but "will not allow riots of any kind, disruptions to freedom of movement." Opposition leader Yair Lapid promised: "We will return, draft everyone, and bring order to the streets of Israel." A May 2026 report relayed from Haaretz said a secret unit inside Israel's Education Ministry tracked teachers' "social media posts, protest participation, and political statements."

The other model: Ukraine

Americans also point to Ukraine: an online register of conscripts created by a 2024 law, a lower mobilization age, and widely reported "busification," recruitment officers pulling men off streets, while an academic panel on forced mobilization was cancelled. It is what a data-driven draft looks like after a long war runs short of soldiers.

The lesson for Americans

  • A complete list turns refusal from invisible into visible. Israel knows exactly who has not reported; the fight is over what to do about it. Automatic registration gives the United States that complete list.
  • The pressure points are ordinary: housing help, childcare, transit, and a routine police stop. The U.S. already ties registration to student aid, federal jobs, citizenship for immigrants, and in many states driver's licenses (penalties and pressure points).
  • Numbers still matter. Seventy-nine thousand orders and 2,100 enlistments show that a large, organized group refusing together can hold out even against a complete list. That is why a state that wants a draft to work invests in data and pressure first.

The double standard

The same Israeli political system that promises to "draft everyone" at home is at war with Iran, and Israel's own media reported in March 2026 that Israeli soldiers "will not be participating on the ground" in a U.S. ground assault on Iran (Israel will not send infantry). An August 2026 Jerusalem Post column said a ground war in Iran would take "between 750 thousand and 1.5 million American troops" (the Jerusalem Post column). Israel struggles to draft its own refusers. The soldiers its war would need on Iranian soil are being counted in Americans. See Israel and the American draft.

What a citizen can check

  • Follow the Times of Israel's coverage of the Haredi draft; it reports the court filings and government numbers directly.
  • Compare: which U.S. benefits are tied to Selective Service registration in your state? Many states link registration to driver's licenses and state aid.
