Iran and the Greater Israel Map: The Obstacle

If you came here because Iran is being bombed, this is the page that ties that war to Greater Israel. The short answer: Iran is not the land. Iran is the obstacle. The widest Greater Israel map, taken from Genesis 15:18, runs "from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates." The Euphrates flows through Syria and Iraq. Iran lies just east of it. So Iran is not inside the biblical line, but it is the one strong state on the far side of that line that has armed and backed the forces resisting Israeli expansion in Lebanon, Syria, Gaza, and Iraq. Remove Iran, and the rest of the map opens. That is this investigation's finding, and Israeli sources say it in their own words.

The sequence, in an Israeli outlet's own words

On 2 October 2024 the English account of Channel 14, the pro-government Israeli network that calls itself "Israel's leading news channel," posted: "At the moment, given that Iran shares no border with Israel and is not a hindrance to the establishment of Greater Israel, Israel should focus on Syria before starting the war with Iran" (C14 News English on X, 2 October 2024). An Israeli outlet used "Greater Israel" as a goal, put Syria first, and named "the war with Iran" as the next step.

Then look at what happened:

  1. 8 December 2024: Syria's Assad government, Iran's main Arab ally, fell. Israel took Mount Hermon and the Syrian buffer zone that day. Netanyahu called it "an earthquake that hasn't happened in the 100 years since the Sykes-Picot Agreement." See Syria.
  2. 13 June 2025: Israel attacked Iran; the United States bombed Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan on 22 June. Netanyahu: "we will change the face of the Middle East. That is exactly what we are doing" (JNS, June 2025).
  3. 12 August 2025: Netanyahu said he connects "very much" to the vision of Greater Israel (Times of Israel). See Netanyahu's "Very Much".
  4. 28 February 2026: the United States and Israel launched a larger war on Iran, aimed, as an Israeli reserve colonel wrote, at "regime change in Iran" (Udi Evental on X, 25 April 2026).
  5. March 2026: with Iran under attack and Hezbollah drawn in, Israel took southern Lebanon to the Litani River. Finance Minister Smotrich: "the new Israeli border must be the Litani." See Lebanon.
  6. May 2026: Netanyahu: "we have created three security zones deep within enemy territory" (NPR, 31 May 2026).
  7. September 2026: Defense Minister Katz: the Golan and Hermon are Israel's "forever."

Each blow to Iran's network was followed by land. That is the pattern the whole Greater Israel section documents, country by country, on The Neighbors.

The last of the seven

After 9/11, General Wesley Clark said, a Pentagon memo listed seven countries to be taken down: Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Iran. Iran is the last. The 1996 "Clean Break" paper written for Netanyahu named Iraq and Syria as targets and Iran as the threat behind them. The economist Jeffrey Sachs has called the list "all part of the 'greater Israel' idea." Full account: Iran, the last of the seven, and the Pentagon section's list of wars.

Israeli leaders tie Iran to redrawing the region

  • The "curse" map. At the UN on 27 September 2024 Netanyahu held up "The Curse," a map with what the Times of Israel called "Iran's dark crescent of allies across the Middle East" shaded dark (Times of Israel, 27 September 2024; full text).
  • The circles. Former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant described Israel's strategy as circles: first the West Bank and Gaza; second "Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Egypt"; third "hostile states with no shared border, historically Iraq and Libya, and in recent years... we are mainly speaking of Iran" (Yoav Gallant, The Rod Martin Report, 10 September 2026). His essay's title: "How Israel Is Changing the Map Around Iran."
  • Collapse, not change. Daniel Levy, a former Israeli government adviser: "Israel wants to be surrounded by failed, fragmenting, or co-opted states. Its goal in Iran is regime and state collapse, not regime change" (thread with the clip, 25 April 2026).
  • "Sykes-Picot 2026." Writing in Ynet days into the 2026 war, Meir Swissa called for redrawing the region's map, with Iran split along ethnic lines. See Breaking up Iran.
  • A colonel's warning. Col. (res.) Udi Evental wrote that "a security-ideological coalition has now emerged in Israel, using a defensive-preventive narrative to advance a messianic agenda of 'Greater Israel,'" and that the regime-change goal in Iran "requires either eternal war or endless rounds of attrition" (Udi Evental on X, 25 April 2026).

The voices who put Iran on the map

Some Israeli voices go further and place part of Iran inside the claim. The settler leader Daniella Weiss said in a 2024 interview: "From the Euphrates to the Nile…Southern Lebanon is a part of it, all of it. Even parts of Syria, part of Iraq, part of Iran. It's huge" (Going Underground on X, 10 December 2024, video). Weiss heads the Nachala settlement movement. An Israeli supporter of the maximal map, writing in Hebrew after the 2026 war began, drew the line the other way: the complete-Land-of-Israel plan "does not take territory from the Persians," only from Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, Syria, Turkey, and Lebanon (Dor Aharon on X, 11 March 2026, translation for this page). Either way, the war on Iran clears the road to the land in between.

What Iran's leaders say

Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, 4 June 2026: "Imperialism, led by the US, has built a military base called Israel over the past 80 years. And they don't accept the existence of strong, independent Iran on the eastern border of the false, illegitimate geography of Greater Israel — that is, east of the Euphrates River" (Roya News English; MenchOsint on X). President Masoud Pezeshkian: "We aren't seeking territory or expansion—unlike Zionist Israel, which aims for Greater Israel. We're not looking for Greater Iran" (video caption, 7 August 2026). Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh: "The Israeli regime wanted to have the Greater Israel project and change the geopolitics of the region" (post, 18 April 2026). Their account and the Channel 14 account agree on the geography. Full account: East of the Euphrates.

The region's other powers see it the same way. Turkey's Erdoğan: "We are well aware of the ultimate goal of the 'Greater Israel' illusion" (The Cradle on X, 10 June 2026). Hezbollah's Naim Qassem: "America and Israel sought to eliminate Iran by changing its regime" as part of that project (Zeinab Saffar on X, 26 June 2026).

What Americans who studied it say

  • Jeremy Scahill, journalist: "The Iran war is the apex of the Israeli agenda to build a Greater Israel. Israel needs Iran destroyed to make the rest of the project easier" (as quoted on X's #GreaterIsrael page), and "I don't think there's any doubt that the agenda of Israel is a so-called greater Israel. I don't think that that's a conspiracy theory" (YouTube, May 2026).
  • Paul Craig Roberts, assistant secretary of the Treasury under Reagan: the Iran war "cannot be understood in isolation" from Greater Israel, and Israel "succeeded in pushing US President Donald Trump into confrontation with Iran, something it had failed to achieve with previous US presidents" (Middle East Monitor, 28 April 2026).
  • A former CIA counterterrorism officer: "Blatant reason for Syrian, Iranian wars is a thing called Greater Israel... The president, for whatever reason, signed on to that. It's a disaster for US" (RT on X, 19 March 2026).

Iraq, the road to Iran

The Wall Street Journal reported in May 2026 that Israel built and defended a secret base inside Iraq for the Iran war, struck Iraqi troops who came near it, and that the United States knew (Wall Street Journal). The war on Iran runs through a country the Greater Israel map already claims to the Euphrates. See Iraq.

What this means for an American family

If the Iran war were only about a nuclear program, it would have an end. If it is about removing the obstacle to a larger map, as Israel's own outlets, officials, and former officials describe, then it is the "eternal war" an Israeli colonel warned of. That is the war for which Israeli voices want hundreds of thousands of American soldiers on Iranian soil, and for which Congress is building the machinery of a draft. Other sections of this investigation cover the calls for US troops in Iran and the forced draft law.
