Greater Israel Patches on Soldiers' Uniforms
Soldiers everywhere wear unofficial "morale patches" with unit jokes and slogans. Since the Gaza war began, photographs have shown Israeli soldiers wearing patches of a very particular kind: a map of Greater Israel with the Hebrew words Eretz Yisrael HaShlema, "the Complete Land of Israel," or Eretz Yisrael HaMuvtachat, "the Promised Land of Israel." Some of the maps reach the Nile and the Euphrates. This page sets out what the photographs show, what the army says, and why the patches matter.
What the photos show
- In June 2024 a photograph circulated of a soldier in Gaza with a patch "showing a map of Greater Israel, which includes parts of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon." The post was viewed about 1.45 million times (Motasem A Dalloul on X, 16 June 2024). A second post the same day described "a badge ... spotted on an Israeli occupation soldier's arm in Gaza; the map shows 'Greater Israel'" (DrKaiaRSakri on X, 16 June 2024).
- Grok, the AI system on X, described one patch in September 2026: "Top patch is the Israeli flag. Bottom reads ארץ ישראל השלמה (Eretz Yisrael Hashlema / Complete Land of Israel) with a map of the maximalist Greater Israel concept. ... The map matches common depictions of biblical claims (Genesis 15:18) from the river of Egypt to the Euphrates" (Grok on X, 24 September 2026). Of another, in March 2026: "an unofficial patch some IDF soldiers have worn since 2024, featuring Hebrew for 'Promised Land of Israel' and a map of biblical borders (Nile to Euphrates)" (Grok on X, 10 March 2026).
- Even bne IntelliNews, in an article arguing against the Greater Israel "theory," conceded of a badge reading "The Land of Israel is guaranteed": "it is true that it is a real badge" (bne IntelliNews, 14 April 2026).
- Al Jazeera's March 2026 video on Greater Israel opened with "a soldier's shoulder patch in Gaza" showing "a map labeled 'Numbers Land'," a reference to the borders in the Book of Numbers, and tied it to "a leaked audio from Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich on West Bank expansion" (X trending summary, 22 March 2026).
What the army says
The Israel Defense Forces says it bans unauthorized insignia. According to Grok, it "banned unauthorized non-military patches in Oct 2024 after backlash" and has "disciplined similar ones" (Grok on X, 17 March 2026); it had earlier removed "Messiah" patches. The photographs kept appearing after the ban. Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib, a Gaza-born writer who is a sharp critic of Hamas, wrote in August 2025 that such patches "have been observed on some Israeli soldiers fighting in Gaza, stationed in the West Bank, not to mention large parts of the violent settler enterprise" (Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib on X, 14 August 2025).
A ban on a patch does not remove the idea from the soldier. What the photographs show is that the whole-land map has reached the men carrying the rifles, in the same months that ministers were calling for settlement in Gaza and southern Lebanon.
Why it matters
The patches are the map as the troops understand it. Soldiers on the ground in Gaza and the West Bank wore a map that reaches Egypt and Iraq, while their prime minister told an interviewer he connects "very much" to a Greater Israel vision, and their finance minister named the Litani River as the new border. For American families, the question is simple: if American soldiers are ever sent to fight beside these units in Iran, as Israeli voices have urged (see US soldiers in Iran: the articles), whose map will they be fighting for?
Evidence rating: CONFIRMED that Greater Israel map patches have been photographed on Israeli soldiers since 2024; the army's ban confirms it knew of them.
Status: Motasem A Dalloul and Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib are alive. The soldiers in the photographs are not named. Nothing on this page states that any living person committed a crime.
