Yair Lapid: "As Broad as Possible"
Yair Lapid leads Israel's parliamentary opposition. His party, Yesh Atid, is secular, and American news usually describes him as a centrist, the moderate alternative to Benjamin Netanyahu. He once endorsed a two-state solution. That is why his words in February 2026 matter so much. When the biblical Nile-to-Euphrates map came up, the man Americans are told is the moderate did not reject it. He embraced it, and named only practical limits.
Evidence rating: CONFIRMED that the leader of Israel's opposition said the biblical borders are Israel's borders and that he wants them "as broad as possible."
What set it off
On 20 February 2026, the United States ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, told Tucker Carlson that "It would be fine if they took it all" when Carlson asked about the land promised in Genesis 15, "from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates." Arab governments protested. Israeli journalists then asked Israeli politicians where they stood. The full Huckabee exchange is on Ambassador Huckabee: "It Would Be Fine If They Took It All".
What Lapid said
Lapid answered in an interview with Kipa News, an Israeli religious news site, around 23 and 24 February 2026. Al Jazeera reported his words:
- "Zionism is based on the Bible, our mandate over the land of Israel is biblical, the biblical borders of Israel are very clear."
- Asked "How broad?", he answered: "As broad as possible."
- He cited "considerations of security and policy and time" as the limits.
(Al Jazeera, 24 February 2026; Middle East Eye)
A fuller rendering of the same interview, circulated on X's trending page under the title "Yair Lapid Backs Biblical Borders for Israel as Broad as Possible," has him saying: "I support anything that will allow the Jews a large, broad, strong land and a safe haven for us, our children and our children's children. That I support," and "I believe our ownership deed over the land of Israel is the Bible, therefore the borders are the Bible's borders." Asked whether that means land all the way to Iraq, the summary gives his answer as "Fundamentally, the great, big and vast Israel, as much as possible." The trend page counted more than 23,000 posts (X trending summary, 24 February 2026). Those renderings are translations from Hebrew by the summary's writers. The core words, "the biblical borders of Israel are very clear" and "as broad as possible," are in Al Jazeera's report.
Al Jazeera's own write-up two days later put Lapid beside Huckabee as proof that "recent comments by United States and Israeli officials supporting the concept of a 'Greater Israel' have raised alarm bells across the region" (Al Jazeera, 26 February 2026). On Al Jazeera's UpFront program in March 2026, a guest discussing how the war on Iran reflects Greater Israel noted that Lapid had "also recently came out and talked about the biblical borders of Israel" (Al Jazeera UpFront, 15 March 2026).
Why the opposition leader's words matter
In Israeli politics the question is usually framed as the hard right against everyone else. Lapid is supposed to be everyone else. He has led the opposition since January 2023. In the same interview he condemned European recognition of a Palestinian state as a "reward for terror," according to the trending summary.
Lebanese readers noticed at once what his words meant for them. On Reddit's Lebanon forum, under the title "The biblical borders of Israel are clear," one reader wrote that "Lebanon is actually mentioned by name in the question, so there is no doubt he is including us," and another added, "And this is the so called liberal" (Reddit r/lebanon, 25 February 2026).
The American writer Daniel Haqiqatjou described the progression the week Lapid spoke: first Israel's defenders said no one held the wide map, then that only the religious far right did, then Netanyahu said he was "very" attached, and now "'Secular' 'Centrist' and 'Leftist' politicians like Yair Lapid are explicitly affirming their support for the Greater Israel project" (Daniel Haqiqatjou on X, 27 February 2026). Lapid's limits, "security and policy and time," are the same limits Smotrich and Weiss name. They describe how fast, not whether.
Later, in Washington
In July 2026 Lapid met nine U.S. senators in Washington. The outlet Drop Site, reporting the visit, wrote that "He believes the state could ultimately stretch as far as Iraq" (as quoted by Nadav Pollak on X, 29 July 2026). That sentence is Drop Site's paraphrase of his views; his own recorded words remain "as broad as possible."
The point for American readers
When Americans are told the answer to Netanyahu is a more moderate Israeli government, Lapid's February 2026 answer is worth reading twice. Israel's governing coalition claims "all parts of the Land of Israel," and the leader of the opposition says the borders are the Bible's, as broad as possible, limited by security, policy, and time. See Greater Israel from the Nile to the Euphrates and The 2022 Guidelines and the Nation-State Law.
Status: Yair Lapid is alive. Mike Huckabee, Tucker Carlson, Daniel Haqiqatjou, and Nadav Pollak are alive. Nothing on this page states that any living person committed a crime.
