Lapid and "The Borders of the Bible" (February 2026)

Americans often hear that Greater Israel talk comes only from Israel's far right. The February 2026 remarks of Yair Lapid show otherwise. Lapid leads Yesh Atid, Israel's largest centrist party, served as prime minister in 2022, and is the leader of the opposition to Netanyahu. When the question of the biblical borders came up, he did not reject it. He embraced it. This page records what he said, the context, and why it matters that Israel's government and opposition agree on the map.

The context: the American ambassador

On 20 February 2026 Tucker Carlson asked US Ambassador Mike Huckabee about Genesis 15:18, which promises Abraham's descendants the land "from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates," covering, as Carlson listed it, "Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, large parts of Saudi Arabia and Iraq." Huckabee answered: "It would be fine if they took it all" (Tucker Carlson Network on X, 20 February 2026; video caption). He later called the remark "somewhat hyperbolic" and said "Israel is not seeking territorial expansion" (The Cradle on X, 23 February 2026). The fuller exchange is on The Nile to the Euphrates.

What Lapid said

Days later the religious Israeli news site Kipa asked Lapid whether he agreed. As reported by The Cradle:

"I support anything that will allow the Jews a large, broad, strong land and a safe haven for us, our children and our children's children. That I support."

Asked "How broad?" he answered: "As broad [as possible]" (The Cradle on X, 24 February 2026). He added, as reported by Sunna Files, that "the borders of the Land of Israel are the borders of the Bible" (Sunna Files). Another account of the same interview gives his words as: "Zionism is based on the Bible, our mission in the land of Israel is according to the Torah, and the biblical borders of Israel are very clear. Our deed of ownership is the Torah itself, and our borders are the borders drawn in this book" (Sprinter Press on X, 25 February 2026). Asked about Iraq, his answer was rendered by X's news summary as "Fundamentally, the great, big and vast Israel, as much as possible."

The Cradle framed it as saying Israel "could stretch as far as Iraq." That phrase is the outlet's summary; Lapid's own quoted words are "as broad as possible" and "the borders of the Bible." Both lead to the same place: the biblical border in Genesis is the Euphrates, and the Euphrates runs through Iraq.

Five months later: nine US senators

On 29 July 2026 Drop Site reported: "Senior Senate Democrats meet with Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid who calls for expanding Israel to its 'biblical borders.'" The meeting, it said, "led by Sen. Jackie Rosen, included Sens. Tim Kaine, Michael Bennet, Richard Blumenthal, Maggie Hassan, Cory Booker, Brian Schatz, John Hickenlooper and Catherine Cortez Masto, according to photos shared by Lapid's office with the Jerusalem Post" (Drop Site post, as quoted on X, 29 July 2026). Israeli analyst Nadav Pollak objected that Lapid did not literally say Israel should expand "until Iraq" (Nadav Pollak on X, 30 July 2026). The quoted words above stand on their own: "the borders of the Bible."

Why it matters

When the leader of Israel's governing coalition says he feels "very" connected to Greater Israel, and the leader of the opposition says Israel's borders are "the borders of the Bible," there is no major Israeli party offering the other side of that question. A Lebanese writer observed in September 2026 that "neither the ruling coalition nor the opposition parties reject this declaration; on the contrary, these parties compete to see who is best positioned to implement these expansionist projects" (The Intel Drop, 20 September 2026). And senior members of the US Senate sit down with the men who say it.

Evidence rating: CONFIRMED (Lapid's words as published).

Status: Yair Lapid, Mike Huckabee, Tucker Carlson, Nadav Pollak, and the nine senators named are alive. Nothing on this page states that any living person committed a crime.
