The Southern Syria Buffer Zone, the Druze, and the Settlers

South of Damascus lie three Syrian provinces: Quneitra, next to the Golan; Daraa, on the Jordanian border; and Suwayda, home to most of Syria's Druze, a religious minority that also lives in Israel and Lebanon. Since December 2024 Israel has pushed its control into all three. It began with the 1974 buffer zone, grew into a declared no-go zone for the Syrian army, and is now drawing settlers. This page walks through each step.

Step 1: the buffer zone (December 2024)

When Assad fell on 8 December 2024, Israeli forces moved into the UN-patrolled strip between the Golan and the rest of Syria and took Mount Hermon (see Mount Hermon). Netanyahu's office approved a plan to expand settlement on the Golan a week later: "We will continue to hold onto it, develop it, & settle it" (Ramy Abdu on X, 15 December 2024).

Step 2: the whole south (2025)

In 2025 Netanyahu declared that the Syrian army would not be allowed into southern Syria south of Damascus, citing protection of the Druze. As the British broadcaster Afshin Rattansi put it in July 2025, Netanyahu announced "the 'demilitarisation' of the Golan Heights and to the Druze Mountain area, as Israel expands its occupation" (Afshin Rattansi on X, 17 July 2025, video). In March 2025 Netanyahu told forces to prepare to "defend" Jaramana, a Druze suburb on the edge of Damascus: "We will not allow the terroristic Islamic extremist regime in Syria to harm the Druze community" (post, 2 March 2025). In July 2025, during fighting in Suwayda, Israel bombed Damascus itself (post sharing footage and a Jeffrey Sachs interview, 17 July 2025).

By September 2025 a journalist in Syria reported Israeli troops had come "15 min from Damascus" and stayed two hours without resistance, and that Israel had "extended influence over Quneitra, Daraa & Suwayda." His warning: "Israelis will keep taking land unless resisted" (Bilal Abdul Kareem on X, 1 September 2025; 26 August 2025).

Step 3: the settlers (2026)

  • Truthout reported in April 2026 that "far-right Israeli settlers are increasingly crossing from the occupied Golan Heights into southern Syria in an effort to advance a 'Greater Israel' project, with incursions taking place in areas already under de facto Israeli military control" (Truthout on X, 28 April 2026).
  • Middle East Eye followed in July: "Settler project for 'Greater Israel' sets its eyes on Syria. As Israel deepens its hold in southern Syria, settlers want to transform the occupied territory into a new frontier" (Middle East Eye, 3 July 2026).
  • Knesset member Yitzhak Kroizer: "We should settle in the buffer zone" (video, 22 March 2026).
  • Netanyahu's brother-in-law Hagi Ben Artzi told a 2024 settler conference that Israel's borders should include Syria "according to what was promised in the Bible" (+972 Magazine).
  • A Golan-based rights group, Al-Marsad, quoted by Kit Klarenberg, said of the settlers: "They said they need these lands to absorb hundreds of thousands of Jews from all over the world. Southern Lebanon and southern Syria are very crucial for the future state of Israel" (MintPress News).
  • A Syrian-focused account reported in August 2026 that Israel had placed a herd of 140 cattle on Syrian land near the Golan as a rural outpost, the same method used in the West Bank (Foad Mahdavi on X, 26 August 2026).

What people living there say

In September 2026 the Israeli researcher and journalist Elizabeth Tsurkov published an investigation in Haaretz on "the Israeli occupation of southern Syria, based on interviews with dozens of local residents, Syrian detainees released from Israeli prisons & Israeli soldiers who served there." Her summary: "Israel is creating new enemies" (Elizabeth Tsurkov on X, 25 September 2026). A long report citing a Syrian monitoring group claimed Israel took about 350 square kilometers in the first 48 hours after Assad fell and was building a fortified "smart border" line (Unplug The Empire on X, 6 July 2026); those figures come from that report and were not independently checked here.

The neighbors' warning

Jordan's King Abdullah, whose country borders Daraa, told the UN in September 2026: "If Israel continues its antagonistic approach in southern Syria, will the international community stand by and let that happen?" and "Any threat to our northern border or our water security is a threat to our national security. Jordan will not look away" (NowSinister on X, 22 September 2026, video). Turkey's Erdoğan said Turkey's security "begins not only in Hatay, but also in Aleppo, Damascus, and Beirut" (The Cradle on X, 10 June 2026).

The pattern

Take land "temporarily" for security. Declare a larger zone off-limits to the other side's army. Protect a minority as the reason to stay. Let settlers in. It is the West Bank pattern, now running in southern Syria and southern Lebanon at the same time. The Israeli reserve colonel Udi Evental described exactly this: security zones where "various actors in Israel, especially on the extreme right, identify available territories for expansion, annexation, and Jewish settlement" (Udi Evental on X, 25 April 2026).

Evidence rating: CONFIRMED that Israel controls the buffer zone and has declared southern Syria off-limits to the Syrian army. STRONG that settlers are moving to settle it.

Status: Benjamin Netanyahu, Yitzhak Kroizer, Hagi Ben Artzi, Elizabeth Tsurkov, King Abdullah II, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and Udi Evental are alive. Nothing on this page states that any living person committed a crime.
