Genesis 15 and the Biblical Borders

Every map of the widest "Greater Israel" starts from a few verses of the Hebrew Bible. This page sets out those verses, how today's proponents read them as a modern land claim, and why that reading matters now that Israeli and American officials are citing the Bible to justify borders.

The verses

  • Genesis 15:18, the covenant with Abram: "Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates." Verses 19 to 21 list ten peoples then living there.
  • Deuteronomy 11:24: "Every place where the sole of your foot will tread shall be yours—from the wilderness and the Lebanon, from the river—the Euphrates River—until the western sea shall be your boundary" (as quoted in the 2024 Jerusalem Post article).
  • Joshua 1:4: "from the desert and Lebanon until the great river, the Euphrates."
  • Exodus 23:31 and Deuteronomy 1:7 also name the Euphrates.

A narrower set of borders appears in Numbers 34 and Ezekiel 47, which put the eastern edge at the Jordan River. The Israeli political right calls that narrower land "the whole land," Eretz Yisrael HaShlema: all of historic Palestine plus the Golan. As a widely shared explainer put it in March 2026, the narrow "Whole Land of Israel (Sea to Jordan) has moved from fringe ideology to active political practice via settlements and annexation talk," while the giant version is inspiration for hardliners, "not a realistic government blueprint. For now" (Mario Nawfal on X, 30 March 2026).

Which river of Egypt

Commentators disagree whether "the river of Egypt" is the Nile or a seasonal stream on the Sinai coast. Even All Israel News, explaining the text in March 2026, begins: "Fact 1: Yes, God promised the land all the way to the Euphrates" (All Israel News, 21 March 2026). The proponents who matter politically read it as the Nile. Daniella Weiss says so outright. So does Adrian Stein, writing on the Times of Israel's blog platform in January 2024, who calls Genesis 15:18 "a legal claim and title to all of the lands between the two rivers" and adds: "There is in fact no stronger claim to any piece of property in the world than the Jewish claim to the Holy Land, and the holy lands to their full extent—that is, from the 'River to the River,' from the Euphrates to the Nile" (Times of Israel blogs, 8 January 2024).

From verse to commandment to conquer

The step that turns a verse into a war aim is the idea that the land must be taken. In September 2024 the Jerusalem Post's Judaism section taught exactly that: "The Torah provides clear guidelines regarding the areas we were commanded to conquer when taking possession of the land," and "the Ramban wrote that Lebanon is within the borders of Israel and adds that we were obligated and commanded to conquer it." It discussed milchemet mitzvah, a commanded war, and "halachic discussions about the obligation to conquer and settle" land inside the biblical borders. The paper deleted the article after it spread. See The Deleted Jerusalem Post Article on Lebanon.

Officials who cite the Bible for borders

The Bible is not only a settler text. In the last three years:

  • Netanyahu told the UN General Assembly in September 2026, speaking to Syria's president about the Golan: "The Jews have been on the Golan Heights since the days of Moses. You can read it in the Bible" (Mario Nawfal on X, 24 September 2026). He has also said, "This has been our land for 3,500 years, since Abraham.. we wrote the Bible" (to Dinesh D'Souza, clip posted 8 October 2025).
  • Yair Lapid, the opposition leader: "Zionism is based on the Bible, our mandate over the land of Israel is biblical, the biblical borders of Israel are very clear," and "I believe our ownership deed over the land of Israel is the Bible, therefore the borders are the Bible's borders" (X trending summary, 24 February 2026).
  • U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee, pressed by Tucker Carlson on Genesis 15: "Israel is a land that God gave, through Abraham, to a people that he chose ... a people, a place, and a purpose" (TRT World), and on the land from the Nile to the Euphrates, "It would be fine if they took it all."
  • U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson at the Ariel settlement: "The Bible teaches that Judea and Samaria were promised to the Jewish people, and they belong to you by right" (as quoted by CAIR, 25 September 2026). See Congress.

American Christian Zionists carry the same reading. One widely followed account wrote in September 2026: "The Bible very precisely indicates the borders, from the Nile to the Euphrates (Genesis 15:18). The time will come when this entire area will belong to Israel" (Benjamin Rapture Ready on X, 19 September 2026). See Christian Zionism and the war.

Evidence rating: CONFIRMED that Israeli and American officials cite the Bible as the basis for present-day borders.

Why it matters

A border drawn by treaty can be negotiated. A border drawn by a covenant cannot, and it has no fixed end short of the widest line. That is why the verses matter to Americans: the men in charge of Israel's budget, its opposition, and America's embassy speak of the land in the language of a deed that has not yet been fully collected.

Status: Benjamin Netanyahu, Yair Lapid, Mike Huckabee, Mike Johnson, Tucker Carlson, Daniella Weiss, and Adrian Stein are alive. Nothing on this page states that any living person committed a crime.
