Greater Israel

"Greater Israel" is the English name for the Hebrew Eretz Yisrael HaShlema, "the Whole Land of Israel." It is the idea that Israel's rightful borders are far larger than the ones the world recognizes, and it is a long-held plan, not a slogan. If you have just heard that Iran is being bombed and wondered what the war is really about, this is the idea underneath it. This section shows what Greater Israel is, who says it in their own words, how much of it has already been taken, why Iran stands in its way, and how the United States was drawn in.

The phrase covers three nested maps. The inner map is Israel plus the West Bank, Gaza, and the Golan Heights: everything "between the Sea and the Jordan," in the words of the 1977 platform of Likud, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's party (Jewish Virtual Library). The middle map adds southern Lebanon to the Litani River and the Syrian side of Mount Hermon, land the army now holds and ministers say will be kept. The outer map comes from Genesis 15:18, "from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates," and reaches into Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia. Each map is the horizon for the one inside it: every piece taken is held, and becomes the floor for the next.

The evidence comes from Israel's own leaders and press. On 12 August 2025, two months after the first Israeli and American strikes on Iran, Netanyahu was handed an amulet with a map of the Promised Land on i24 television and asked whether he connects to the vision of Greater Israel. He answered: "Very much." The Times of Israel, which reported it, noted the exchange was cut from the channel's English YouTube version (Times of Israel, 12 August 2025). His government's official guidelines claim for the Jewish people "an exclusive and inalienable right to all parts of the Land of Israel" (Times of Israel, 28 December 2022). His finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, said in April 2026: "There will be expansion in Gaza that will extend our borders. In Lebanon, to the Litani, in Syria, Mount Hermon" (Ynetnews, April 2026).

Why it matters to an American family: the United States arms and defends Israel, its ambassador and its Speaker of the House speak of biblical borders, and its troops are in the region. If the war on Iran were only about a nuclear program, it would have an end. As part of remaking the map of the Middle East, in Netanyahu's own phrase "change the face of the Middle East," it does not end with Iran, and the next soldiers asked to fight it may be American.

Three maps under one name

For decades, "Greater Israel" in Israeli politics meant the inner map. When Prime Minister Ehud Olmert gave it up in 2008, he said: "I used to believe that everything from the Jordan Riverbank to the Mediterranean Sea was ours" (Ynetnews, 14 September 2008). His successors took it back up, and the wider maps are now spoken of openly. In February 2026 the opposition leader, Yair Lapid, asked about the Nile-to-Euphrates map, said "the biblical borders of Israel are very clear" and that he wants them "as broad as possible" (Al Jazeera, 24 February 2026). When the prime minister, his finance minister, and the leader of the opposition all speak this way, it is the mainstream of Israeli politics, not a fringe.

From the Nile to the Euphrates

The outer map rests on God's promise to Abraham in Genesis 15:18. Israel's founders knew it well: Zionist leaders put a map reaching the Litani, the Golan, and the east bank of the Jordan before the 1919 peace conference at Versailles. Today it is stated plainly by settler leader Daniella Weiss ("We know from the Bible that the real borders of Greater Israel are the Euphrates and the Nile") and, from the American side, by U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee, who told Tucker Carlson in February 2026 that "It would be fine if they took it all."

Netanyahu's "Very much"

The prime minister's "Very much" in August 2025 came with the words "historic and spiritual mission." Haaretz's editor-in-chief, Aluf Benn, had already written in December 2024 that Netanyahu wanted to be remembered for extending Israel's reach "from Gaza in the south to Syria and the Golan Heights in the north." By May 2026 Netanyahu was describing "three security zones deep within enemy territory" in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza, and in September 2026 he told the UN that Jews had been on the Golan "since the days of Moses."

The ministers who set policy

The ministers who run Israel's finances, police, and settlements say it out loud. Smotrich spoke in Paris behind a map that included Jordan (March 2023), told a documentary "It is written that the future of Jerusalem is to expand to Damascus" (October 2024), and named the Litani and Mount Hermon as Israel's coming borders (April 2026). National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir said of Gaza that the war "presents an opportunity to concentrate on encouraging the migration of the residents," and wrote "All of Lebanon needs to burn!" None has been removed from office.

The settlers, the patches, and the maps

The settler movement is the engine that turns maps into towns. Its leaders hold conferences on settling Gaza and southern Lebanon, and say "We will settle the entire promised land." Israeli soldiers have been photographed wearing patches showing the wide map, and Netanyahu has twice stood at the UN holding maps that erase the West Bank and Gaza.

The charter and the settlements

The inner map is written law and party doctrine. Likud's 1977 platform says "between the Sea and the Jordan there will only be Israeli sovereignty." The Knesset voted 68 to 9 against a Palestinian state (July 2024) and 71 to 13 for annexing the West Bank (July 2025). Smotrich said the E1 settlement plan "buries the idea of a Palestinian state," and described the government as "for the first time taking responsibility for the territory as permanent sovereign." During the Iran war itself, Israel approved 34 new settlements.

Steps already taken

The Golan was taken in 1967, annexed in 1981, recognized by Washington in 2019, and declared part of Israel "forever" by the defense minister in September 2026. In Gaza, the army chief called the ceasefire line "a new border line," and Netanyahu ordered the army to hold 70 percent of the Strip. By one satellite count, Israel has taken about 1,000 square kilometers since October 2023.

Lebanon and Syria: new ground since 2024

In December 2024, as Assad fell, Israel took the Syrian buffer zone and the summit of Mount Hermon. In March 2026 Defense Minister Israel Katz announced a "security zone" in southern Lebanon up to the Litani River, which Reuters called "nearly a tenth of Lebanon," and said displaced residents would not return. A settler movement, Uri Tzafon, wants that land settled. An Israeli reserve colonel, Udi Evental, warned that "a security-ideological coalition" is "using a defensive-preventive narrative to advance a messianic agenda of "Greater Israel.""

The neighbors on the map

The outer map would take land from Jordan, Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia. Their governments have answered in their own words: Jordan called the vision "futile illusions," Egypt said it "rejects the path of peace," and Iraq said it reveals "expansionist ambitions." What Jordan and Egypt fear most is Palestinians pushed across their borders, an idea Israeli officials have raised before.

Iran: the obstacle

Iran lies east of the Euphrates, outside even the widest biblical border. Its place in the story is as the last regional power able to stand in the way. At the UN in 2024 Netanyahu showed a "curse" map of Iran and its allies. During the June 2025 war he said, "We will change the face of the Middle East. That is exactly what we are doing." The English account of Israel's pro-government Channel 14 put the sequence bluntly in October 2024: "Israel should focus on Syria before starting the war with Iran." As Iran's network in Syria and Lebanon was broken, Israel took ground in both.

America's part

The U.S. ambassador to Israel says Israelis have a biblical right to the land. The Speaker of the House told settlers at Ariel that Judea and Samaria "belong to you by right." Congress funds the weapons that hold the new lines. This is how a foreign plan becomes an American war, and why American parents are now reading about a draft.

The denials against the record

Israel's government has repeatedly denied any Greater Israel plan: "Israel has no territorial claims against any neighboring countries" (August 2025), the Nile-to-Euphrates charge is "a blatant lie" (November 2024), the new zones are "security, not expansion." Each denial is contradicted by the record its own ministers made, sometimes in the same month. Israel has also never declared where its borders are.
