1,000 Square Kilometers Since October 2023
A square kilometer is a little under 250 acres; one thousand of them is about 386 square miles. That is how much land, by one satellite count, Israel's army has taken and held beyond its lines since the Hamas attack of October 2023: in southern Lebanon, in Gaza, and in southern Syria. This page lays out what was taken, what the prime minister and defense minister say about keeping it, and what happens to the people who lived there.
Evidence rating: CONFIRMED that Israel holds new ground in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza and that its leaders say the army will stay. STRONG on the 1,000-square-kilometer total, which rests on a satellite analysis reported through secondary accounts.
The count
In May 2026 an account called Vanguard summarized a Financial Times satellite analysis: "FT satellites just proved that Israel has illegally seized 1,000 square kilometers of territory since October 2023," most of it in Lebanon, then Palestinian land, then Syria, an area it put at about 5 percent of Israel's 1949 borders (Vanguard on X, 19 May 2026). The Grok account, summarizing public reporting in September 2026, gave the same order of size: "~1,000 sq km control in Gaza, Lebanon and Syria," with military control "documented and held indefinitely per Israeli officials" (Grok on X, 26 September 2026; Grok on X, 26 September 2026).
The prime minister and defense minister
- Netanyahu, May 2026: "In Lebanon, Syria and in Gaza, we have created security zones deep beyond our borders," and "We have changed our security concept. We initiate, we attack, and we have created three security zones deep within enemy territory" (NPR, 31 May 2026).
- Netanyahu on Lebanon: "This is a 10-km deep security belt. We are here, and we are not leaving" (as quoted by Lise Santolini on X, 3 May 2026).
- Katz, March 2026: Israel will hold a security zone in southern Lebanon up to the Litani River and residents will not return until the north of Israel is secure (Times of Israel, 24 March 2026; Haaretz, 24 March 2026).
- Katz, June 2026: according to reports of his statement, the army will not withdraw from the "security zones" in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza, which then covered more than 60 percent of the Gaza Strip and more than 10 percent of Lebanese territory, and will stay "without a time limit" (X search results captured in the research file twitter/t22__v253.md).
- Katz, September 2026: "The Golan is part of Israel forever. We will not withdraw from Mount Hermon & the security zone" (Zeina Khodr on X, 23 September 2026).
The full progression of the wording, from "until" to "forever," is on "Security, Not Expansion": The Buffer-Zone Wording.
Three zones, three stories
Southern Lebanon. The army's zone runs to the Litani River, the river that crosses southern Lebanon to the sea. The American commentator Ana Kasparian reported in April 2026 that at least seven bridges in southern Lebanon had been destroyed and that 1.2 million displaced people had been told they would not return, while Knesset members were planning settlements (Ounka on X, April 2026). Outlook India reported that Apple Maps had dropped the names of southern Lebanese villages (Outlook India on X, 13 April 2026). A settler group, Uri Tzafon, held a conference on settling southern Lebanon in June 2024 (Times of Israel, 16 June 2024), and in December 2024 the army admitted that a settler group had crossed the border into Lebanon (Times of Israel, 18 December 2024). A Jerusalem Post columnist argued in March 2026 for moving "beyond buffer zones" to a permanent presence (Jerusalem Post, 20 March 2026).
Southern Syria. Since December 2024 the army has held the Syrian side of Mount Hermon and a strip beyond the 1974 ceasefire line, including the Yarmouk River and the Al-Wahda Dam. See The Golan Heights.
Gaza. The army holds the land behind the Yellow Line, which its chief of staff called "a new border line," and the prime minister ordered it to reach 70 percent of the Strip. See Gaza: The Yellow Line and the Resettlement Movement.
The ministers name the same lines
The zones match the borders ministers named in advance. In April 2026 Finance Minister Smotrich said at a new settlement: "There will be expansion in Gaza that will extend our borders. In Lebanon, to the Litani, in Syria, Mount Hermon, parts of the north, south, and east" (Ynetnews, April 2026; X trending page, 9 April 2026). See Smotrich in 2026: the Litani and the Hermon. The Dutch journalist Thamar Ottens put the link to the Iran war plainly: "Iran's role was counterweight to Israeli expansion. Neutralize that, and ... freer hand for buffers/annexations/redrawn lines" (Thamar Ottens on X).
Why Americans should care
These zones are held with American weapons and American diplomatic cover, and the Iran war that began in 2026 removed the main power that stood against them. When officials in Washington say the United States opposes annexation, this page is the ground-level record of what is happening anyway. See America's Part in Greater Israel and Greater Israel and the Iran War.
Status: Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel Katz, Bezalel Smotrich, Ana Kasparian, Lise Santolini, Zeina Khodr, and Thamar Ottens are alive. Nothing on this page states that any living person committed a crime.
