Censorship of the War, the Country-List Story, and Draft Talk
In Plato's cave, someone chooses which objects are carried in front of the fire. Nobody in the cave sees them choose. In this war the carriers include military censors, press offices, prosecutors, regulators, platforms, and foreign influence operations. The result is a war Americans have seen "largely... through government-produced videos, presidential social media posts and limited official briefings" (CBS Face the Nation, 2 August 2026). Two stories in particular have been kept dim: the long-standing plan behind the war (the country list and Greater Israel), and the machinery for a draft.
Israel's military censor
In June 2025 Israel's government required foreign crews to get written approval from the military censor for every broadcast and its "precise location," and police halted broadcasts of missile impact sites (Jerusalem Post, JNS). In 2026 the army banned live skylines and images of interceptions. Read more: Israel's Military Censor
Every government at war
Iran ran internet blackouts and threatened anyone photographing damage; Qatar arrested more than 300 people for sharing footage; Italy denied what NATO's secretary-general said about its bases. Read more: Restrictions on Every Side
The Pentagon's own press corps
In October 2025, 40 to 50 Pentagon reporters handed in their badges rather than sign a pledge not to report unauthorized information. By July 2026 there had been no Pentagon briefing in two and a half months, and no embeds. Read more: The Pentagon Press Pledge
Lists, subpoenas, and a regulator
CENTCOM keeps a list of journalists "to disregard" (The Intercept); the Justice Department subpoenaed Wall Street Journal reporters over leaks about Pentagon worries of a prolonged war; the FCC chairman threatened broadcasters' licenses after the President complained about war coverage. A foreign government watching American opinion
An Israeli government "Roaring Lion" status report on the war's third day tracked about 2.32 million posts on X and quoted an American complaining "they dragged us into a regional war with Iran." Read more: "Roaring Lion" Monitoring
An influence network timed to the bombs
Citizen Lab found more than 50 fake X profiles whose activity "appears to have been synchronized" with Israel's June 2025 strikes on Iran, most likely run by "an unidentified agency of the Israeli government, or a sub-contractor." Read more: PRISONBREAK
The country list kept off the wall
General Wesley Clark's account of a Pentagon plan to "take out seven countries in five years," ending with Iran, has been public since 2007. During the war that plan reached its last country, the major U.S. and Israeli news desks did not return to it; users reported "unsafe link" warnings on Greater Israel articles; hosts said they feared being shadowbanned for naming the country behind the war; and posts were answered with the antisemitism label. Draft talk
Fear of a draft went viral; the statute that builds the list got far less airtime; officials answered mothers with "not part of the current plan right now"; the implementing rule was withdrawn without explanation. Read more: Draft Talk and Fear
What a citizen can check
- Read the Jerusalem Post, JNS, and Times of Israel pieces: Israeli outlets reporting their own government's rules.
- Ask how many Pentagon briefings were held this month, and whether any reporters are embedded with U.S. forces.
- Find the primary source that is said to be suppressed, the Clark interview, Section 535, and read it. That is better than arguing about whether it was hidden.
- Check X's published government-request code for requests about the Clark clip or draft talk.
