The "No New Wars" Promise: The Hook That Keeps Voters Facing the Wall
The strongest shadow on the wall is not a claim about Iran. It is a promise about America. Millions of parents voted in 2024 for a candidate who said he would end wars, not start them. Holding on to that promise is the easiest way to not see the war that followed.
The promise
- "I'm not going to start a war. I'm going to stop wars" (election night, November 2024, as quoted by the Mises Caucus, 31 March 2026).
- "Kamala would get us into World War III… All of your sons and daughters will end up getting a draft notice" (campaign line, as reposted on X, 9 March 2026).
- 2019: "GOING INTO THE MIDDLE EAST IS THE WORST DECISION EVER MADE IN THE HISTORY OF OUR COUNTRY!" (quoted by Thomas Paine Band, 3 March 2026).
- As late as June 2025, commentator Charlie Kirk on Fox News: "This is the moment President Trump was elected for. No endless wars, but Iran will NOT get a nuclear weapon. Trump can thread the needle" (as quoted by @FreyjaTarte).
What followed
On 28 February 2026 the United States and Israel launched Operation Epic Fury. "We are at war with Iran right now because of decisions made under President Trump in his second term... one of the main reasons millions of us voted for Trump was his repeated Agenda 47-style promises of 'no new wars'" (Raymond Molina, 30 March 2026). "2024: 'No more wars' / 2026: 'Bombing children in Iran is America first actually'" (@hayasaka_aryan).
Who broke with it
- Charlie Kirk had opposed strikes on Iran in mid-2025, calling them, as Grok described one clip, "an act of war against a major country, not part of any America First deal, and a catastrophic mistake" (Grok, 20 September 2026). After his assassination in September 2025, Candace Owens wrote: "It is 100% true that Charlie opposed war with Iran and was fighting with his donors over Israel" (X, 12 September 2025, about 70,000 likes). See Charlie Kirk and the Iran War.
- Marjorie Taylor Greene, who resigned from Congress in January 2026, accused the President, per Grok's summary, of "betraying America First via foreign wars (Iran, Venezuela)," said "he's betrayed us all," and criticized his response to death threats on her family (Grok, 8 September 2026). See Marjorie Taylor Greene.
- Tucker Carlson called the war a betrayal of "America First and no-new-wars promises," per Grok (X, 17 September 2026).
- John Mearsheimer, as promoted by Daniel Davis in January 2026: "The Israelis and the Israel lobby in the United States basically own Trump" (Daniel Davis Deep Dive, 2 January 2026). That is his claim.
- A voter the day before the war: "I didn't want war with Iran for Israel. I don't care about Iran, I care about Indiana" (X, 28 February 2026).
The psychological trap
A March 2026 dispatch addressed to Trump voters named the mechanism: "He said no new wars... Now let's look at the reality. We are in a war with Iran... You do not have to double down just because you once believed. You do not have to defend the indefensible just to avoid admitting a mistake. That is the psychological trap" (Chetter, 20 March 2026). In Plato's cave, the prisoners' prizes go to those best at the shadows; admitting the shadow was false costs status. That is why the climb hurts. See Back to the Wall.
