Checklist Step 1: Is There a War?

The shadow you may have heard: "It's not a war, just precision strikes." "We're not at war with Iran, we're at war with Iran's nuclear program." "Small potatoes."

Documents to check

  1. The announcement. On 28 February 2026 the President announced what ABC News called a "massive and ongoing operation" against Iran with Israel, Operation Epic Fury (ABC News).
  2. Officials' own word. "The President of the United States has said it's a war. The Secretary of War has said it's a war" (Rep. Jared Moskowitz, 5 March 2026).
  3. The dead. At least 19 U.S. service members killed and more than 750 injured by 24 September 2026 (The Guardian).
  4. The length. "Nearly seven months of war" by the September UN session (Al Jazeera via @rjtees1).
  5. Congress. No declaration and no authorization; the Senate refused to end the war 49–50 (same Guardian report).

What they show

Yes. It is a war by the words of the President, the Secretary, members of Congress, and Israel's prime minister ("JOINT MISSIONS over the skies of Iran"), whatever label is used on a given day. It is an undeclared one.

Ask yourself

Has anyone around me said "it's not really a war"? What did they point to? Would I accept "not a war" if my son were the nineteenth name?
