Checklist Step 2: Why Did It Start, and Was the Reason True?
The shadow you may have heard: Iran was "two weeks" from a nuclear weapon and about to strike first; this was "our last, best chance."
Documents to check
- The DNI's written testimony, 18 March 2026: Iran had made "no efforts" to rebuild enrichment after June 2025 (TIME).
- The briefers: Reuters, "Pentagon tells Congress no sign that Iran was going to attack US first"; Senator Warner, asked how much intelligence showed an imminent strike: "None" (X summary, 2 March 2026).
- The resignation letter: "Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation," and the war began due to "pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby" (Joe Kent, 17 March 2026).
- The legal opinion: the United States entered the war "at the request of and in the collective self-defense of its Israeli ally" (Snopes, rated True).
- The diplomacy: Geneva talks on 26 February; a reported "breakthrough" in Oman on 27 February (Diplomacy Before the Bombs).
- The fake quote: a nuclear quote amplified by Netanyahu and U.S. officials with "no Iranian source" (Ynet).
What they show
The public reason was not supported by the government's own intelligence. The legal reason, written for lawyers, names Israel's request. The official reason then changed at least three more times.
Ask yourself
If the reason given was not true, who wanted this war, and why? Would I send my child to fight for a reason I cannot find in any document?
