Checklist Step 5: Could American Ground Troops Go Into Iran?

The shadow you may have heard: "Zero U.S. ground troops." "It's an air war."

Documents to check

  1. The White House, 8 March 2026: "It's not part of the current plan right now, but the president, again, wisely keeps his options on the table" (PolitiFact).
  2. The briefers, March 2026: would not rule out ground troops; "There was no plan, no strategy, no end game shared" (NBC News).
  3. The Armed Services chairs, per the Wall Street Journal's Alex Ward: "strongly hinting that a ground operation in Iran is planned" (X trending, 25 March 2026).
  4. The Israeli newspaper: "between 750 thousand and 1.5 million American troops" for a ground campaign (JPost column).
  5. Israel's own infantry: Israel Will Not Send Infantry.
  6. The public: 65% of Americans expected a large ground war; 7% supported one (Reuters/Ipsos, March 2026, Wikipedia).

What they show

Ground troops are on the table, have not been ruled out, are being hinted at by the chairs of the committees that oversee the military, and are being counted in the hundreds of thousands by an Israeli newspaper. U.S. special forces have already been inside Iran for rescues. Israel is not planning to send its own infantry.

Ask yourself

If a ground war came, how many troops would it take, and where would they come from? See Step 6.
