The Paragraph the DNI Didn't Read Aloud (18 March 2026), and "I Don't Care What She Said" (2025)

March 2026: the written testimony vs. the spoken

On 18 March 2026 Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard gave her annual threat testimony to the Senate Intelligence Committee. Her written statement said: "Iran's nuclear enrichment program was obliterated. There has been no efforts since then to try to rebuild their enrichment capability." TIME and Al Jazeera report she skipped that passage when reading aloud. Al Jazeera quotes Senator Mark Warner: "You chose to omit the parts that contradict Trump" (TIME; Al Jazeera). Two weeks earlier, per TIME, the President had told congressional leaders Iran was within two weeks of a weapon.

One analyst put the gap this way: "Prepared remarks claimed the June 2025 strikes had 'obliterated' enrichment and that there had been 'no efforts since then to try to rebuild.' Her oral testimony was more cautious and did not fully endorse the administration's strongest public claims about an imminent bomb" (@willis17_, 20 September 2026). Anyone who watched the broadcast heard a shorter version than the one filed. The unedited record is the written testimony.

March–June 2025: "not building," then "I don't care"

In March 2025 Gabbard testified that the intelligence community "continues to assess that Iran is not building a nuclear weapon" and that the Supreme Leader had not reauthorized the program suspended in 2003. In June 2025, as strikes neared, the President said: "I don't care what she said. I think they were very close to having one" (17 June), and "She's wrong" (21 June). Gabbard then said the media was "taking my testimony out of context" (TIME, June 2025). By July 2026 a political organizer wrote that "Tulsi Gabbard has resigned" (CPI, 12 July 2026); that is his statement, not confirmed on this page.

The lesson

The record the intelligence community filed kept saying what the public line would not. When the official who holds that record edits it on camera, the only defense is to read what was filed.
