← The Draft Machinery vs. "Nothing Is Happening"

Draft Fears in 2004, 2020, and 2026: What Changed on Paper This Time

Draft fears have followed every flare-up with Iran. The people who say "nothing is happening" point to the earlier scares. The record shows why 2026 is different.

2004

A letter in the Commonwealth Times quoted the Wichita Eagle: "The Bush administration is hinting that if Bush is re-elected, the use of military force to overthrow the government of Iran wouldn't be out of the question. But it won't have enough manpower unless Little Caesar Bush reinstates the draft" (Commonwealth Times, 31 August 2004). The letter also cited a claim that Karl Rove's office had polled on a draft. No draft came, and nothing changed in law.

2020

After the U.S. strike that killed Iranian general Qassem Soleimani, writer Greg Olear: "My kids (15 & 13) are now, based purely on their own social media forays, very concerned about a military draft" (X, 5 January 2020). No draft came, and nothing changed in law.

April 2024

When Iran fired on Israel, a headline reported Americans panic-searching "World War III" and "Can I Be Drafted" (Renegade Tribune). Nothing changed in law.

2026

This time the war came, and the law changed:

  • December 2025: Section 535 of the FY2026 defense law makes registration automatic (Automatic Registration).
  • March 2026: the White House says a draft is "not part of the current plan right now" but "on the table"; the Army raises its enlistment age to 42.
  • July 2026: Selective Service seeks vendors for a draft simulation (The Simulation Request).
  • August–September 2026: a Jerusalem Post column calculates up to 1.5 million American troops for a ground war.

In June 2026 one analyst wrote: "this is the danger for every male 16 year old growing up in America now. If this war escalates further, as I predict, the draft will be likely to meet the war demands for man power and ground forces" (@aj_geo_analysis, 7 June 2026). That is his forecast.

The lesson

The lesson is not "it never happens." It is "check what changed on paper." In 2004 and 2020 nothing did. In 2026, a war started and the law for a draft list was signed.
