Hidden Costs: Money, Casualty Reporting, and the Defense Bill Nobody Reads
"Nothing is happening" works best when the costs are hard to see. Here is what the record and credible voices say about what is kept off the wall.
The money
- The Pentagon said the first six days cost $11.3 billion (X broadcast title, March 2026).
- The President sought about $200 billion more from Congress, per a March dispatch: "While families here at home are choosing between groceries and rent" (Chetter, 20 March 2026).
- By July, an essay citing the Pentagon put the cost at "at least $37.5 billion"; a July X summary said "By June, Pentagon spending hit $113 billion" (X trending, 24 July 2026); CENTCOM was cited for about $43.6 billion (Grok, 21 September 2026). The figures differ by what they count; none is small.
- Truckers faced diesel at "$6.52/gal (up $2.82/gal from 2025)" (@badchoices9); a poster's claim.
The casualty reporting
"Pentagon Changes How It Reports Casualties in Iran War" (Small Wars Journal headline, 28 July 2026). Journalist Borzou Daragahi: U.S. leaders "are complicit in systematically hiding the true costs of the Iran war, and the true magnitude of Iranian attacks, from the American public" (X, 16 September 2026). A Gold Star mother's account amplified: "Republicans held more than 30 hearings on Benghazi. They haven't held any on Trump's Iran war" (X, 19 September 2026).
The timing
A dated list of statements recorded: "Reuters: aides discussed containing the Iran war until after midterms to limit GOP losses, then possibly escalating. Trump denies it; no policy confirmed" (Randy Ferrell, 2 September 2026). At the UN in September, per one summary, the message was "deal after the midterms or face annihilation" (@MyNewsLikes).
The defense bill
An analysis circulating in July 2026 described Section 219 of H.R. 8800, the House's FY2027 defense bill (introduced 13 May 2026, reported 15 June 2026): it "does not formally merge the American and Israeli militaries. It may do something more durable: embed Israeli technology, companies, and strategic priorities throughout the machinery of the Pentagon," "Buried more than one hundred pages into a 1,614-page defense bill" with "No announcement" (X search snippet, 20 July 2026). Activists urged "Vote NO on NDAA until section 1217 is removed... No draft" (X, 31 August 2026). The automatic registration now coming into force was itself one section, 535, of the previous year's bill. The machinery is built in the fine print.
