The Denial Ladder: "It's Not Happening" to "It's Happening and It's Good"

Plato's prisoners do not need to be lied to. They only need to keep facing the wall. There is a well-known pattern for keeping them there, and it has been named many times.

The ladder, as others have named it

  • "it's not happening / it's a right wing conspiracy theory / it may be happening / it's happening and it's good" (a post seen about 24.5 million times, @IterIntellectus, 15 June 2026).
  • "Step 1: 'It's not happening.' Step 2: 'There's not enough evidence to make that claim.' Step 3: 'It only happens marginally.' Step 4: 'It's happening and it's good that it is'" (Chad Prather, 25 September 2026).
  • Climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe described the same ladder for climate denial in 2019, adding that the steps are "all focused on the same goal of avoiding action" (X, 3 June 2019).
  • "The its-not-happening to its-a good-thing pipeline shows that the denial is merely a tactic to get you to stand down" (Carl Benjamin, 29 December 2022, as recorded in the research captures).
  • In one sentence: "We haven't looked for it, and we haven't found it, so it isn't happening, so don't look for it" (@SnowLizard2000, 25 September 2026).

The ladder for the Iran war and the draft

RungIran warDraft
1. It's not happening"We're not at war with Iran""There is no draft"
2. Not enough evidence"No confirmed mass ground invasion""Registration is not conscription"
3. Only marginally"Precision strikes," "not a forever war""Just a procedural update"
4. It's happening and it's good"This war is an America First war" (MENA Unleashed)"In a world where we're fighting Iran... that's not paranoia — that's preparation" (M.A. Rothman)

Each rung is easier to accept once you are standing on the one below it. A parent who accepted "no draft" in March may be told in December that automatic registration was "just preparation," and, if Congress acts, that a draft is patriotic. See Draft Rumors vs. the Record.

The "Nothing Is Happening" files

A father posting as PatriotDad has published a numbered video series under that name: "Here's another 10 minutes of all the things they say isn't happening, but obviously is" (Volume 4, 18 September 2026); "This now makes 50 full minutes of things we are told aren't happening but sure a heck seem to be happening" (Volume 5, 26 September 2026). The videos were not transcribed for this page.
