The Counterterrorism Chief Who Resigned: Joe Kent, "No Imminent Threat" and "Pressure From Israel"

The letter

On 17 March 2026, Joe Kent, director of the National Counterterrorism Center, a retired Green Beret and Gold Star husband, resigned over the war. His letter, archived by the American Presidency Project (letter):

  • "Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation," and the war began due to "pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby."
  • "high-ranking Israeli officials and influential members of the American media deployed a misinformation campaign."
  • "This is the same tactic the Israelis used to draw us into the disastrous Iraq war that cost our nation the lives of thousands."

A later summary of his view: "the narrative & agenda spun by a foreign government- Israel, won the argument & forced us into this war" (@MyTardis_, 21 September 2026).

The record behind his claims

His statement that there was no imminent threat matches what the administration's own briefers told Congress (Reuters, AP, CNN), what Senator Warner said ("None"), and the DNI's written testimony (Shadow Three). His statement about Israel matches the U.S. State Department's legal opinion that the United States entered the war "at the request of" Israel (the opinion). His "misinformation campaign" has at least one documented instance: the fake Iranian nuclear quote amplified by Netanyahu and U.S. officials, exposed by Ynet (The Fake Vahidi Quote).

How he was answered

  • The President, the same day: "a good thing that he's out," "I always thought he was weak on security, very weak on security," and of those who say Iran was not a threat: "We don't want those people... They're not smart people, or they're not savvy people" (Fox News). The White House called his letter "insulting and laughable" (Al Jazeera).
  • A commentator: "a narcissistic grifter... a leaker, a liar, and a peddler of intellectual poison," calling the claim that Israel pushed the war "a libel" (@Grey_0G, 24 March 2026).
  • When he asked the war's backers four questions in June, a reply: "Nobody cares what you think" (Kent's Four Questions).

This is Plato's returning prisoner, mocked for describing what he saw. The full account of Kent and others who opposed the war is on Opponents and Consequences.
