Plato's Cave
About 2,400 years ago Plato described prisoners chained in a cave, facing a wall, who see only shadows cast by a fire behind them and take the shadows for the whole of reality (Republic VII, 514a–520a, Jowett translation). Behind them, unseen, other people carry the objects whose shadows fall on the wall. When one prisoner is freed, sees daylight, and comes back to tell the others, they laugh at him.
This section uses that story to ask one practical question about the war with Iran: are Americans looking at the war, or at its shadow? The shadow is what most of us see: "obliterated," "preemptive," "no ground troops," "no draft," "no new wars." The objects behind it are on the record: an undeclared war in its seventh month; intelligence that said Iran was not building a bomb and not about to strike; a State Department legal opinion that the United States entered the war "at the request of" Israel; a post-9/11 plan that listed Iran as the last of seven countries; Israeli voices counting how many American troops a ground war would take; and a signed law that builds the draft list automatically from December 2026. Officials tell the public nothing is happening. The documents show the machinery is running.

Why this matters to an American family
In this war the shadows are unusually thick, because so little else reaches the wall. CBS's Face the Nation observed in August 2026 that, unlike Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq, "the war with Iran has largely been seen through government-produced videos, presidential social media posts and limited official briefings, leaving Americans with fewer independent accounts of what their government is doing in their name" (X, 2 August 2026). The questions parents ask (is there a war, why, could my son be drafted, is anyone telling me the truth) are exactly the ones the shadows answer too simply.
The allegory in three scenes
Prisoners chained since birth see only shadows and give prizes to whoever is best at guessing them. One is freed; turning toward the fire hurts, and he wants the shadows back. He is dragged up into daylight, returns, and is mocked: "Men would say of him that up he went and down he came without his eyes; and that it was better not even to think of ascending" (517a). The shadows on the wall
"Obliterated" (June 2025) became "two weeks from a bomb" (March 2026). The DNI's written testimony said Iran made "no efforts" to rebuild; briefers told Congress Iran was not preparing to strike first; Senator Warner said "None." The evening before the war, per one timeline, Oman announced a diplomatic "breakthrough." A girls' school in Minab was struck on the first day. The official reason changed four times. "Nothing is happening"
It's not a war; no one is dying; no ground troops; no draft; over in weeks. Each is a partly true fragment that leaves out a document: the President and the Secretary called it a war; at least 19 Americans have died; ground troops are "on the table"; Section 535 makes registration automatic; the war is in its seventh month. The promise that holds the prisoners
"I'm not going to start a war. I'm going to stop wars." Parents who voted on that promise are the hardest to turn around, because admitting the war means admitting the promise was broken. Read more: The "No New Wars" Promise
The draft machinery
The list (automatic registration), the rehearsal (a draft-simulation contract), the recruiting gap (enlistment age 42), the option ("on the table"), and the demand (an Israeli column's 1.5 million American troops) are all on paper. Only the vote of Congress is missing. Read more: The Draft Machinery vs. the Denial
The clipped video
The White House's draft answer was cut into two opposite headlines. The DNI skipped her own paragraph on camera. Israel's Ynet found "no Iranian source" for a nuclear quote repeated by Prime Minister Netanyahu and U.S. officials. Read more: The Clipped Video
The one who checks
The DNI ("I don't care what she said"), the reporters ("fake news"), the DIA (its chief removed), the counterterrorism chief who resigned saying the war came from "pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby" ("very weak on security"), a congresswoman who said "Iraq," and a young conservative leader who called it "a catastrophic mistake." Read more: The Person Who Checks
A cave we already left once
In 2002 Netanyahu told Congress "there is no question whatsoever" Saddam was advancing toward nuclear weapons. In 2004 the Senate found the key judgments "not supported by" the intelligence. Read more: The Iraq WMD Precedent
Who controls the fire
Israel's military censor; the Pentagon's press pledge and months without briefings; a CENTCOM list of journalists "to disregard"; subpoenas for reporters; an Israeli government report tracking American posts; an influence network Citizen Lab tied to Israel's strikes; and silence on the seven-country plan. Walking out, and going back
The checklist takes a parent through the primary documents in nine steps, from "is there a war?" to "what will I do?" Many people go back to the wall; the page on that explains why and how to stay out. Read more: A Parent's Checklist and Back to the Wall.
