The Missing Shadow: Diplomacy in Geneva and Oman, Days Before the Bombs

Some objects never pass in front of the fire at all. Americans were told the war was a "last, best chance." Most were not told that a diplomatic deal was reportedly close.

What the record points to

  • Geneva, 26 February 2026. A Japanese political group's statement: "Despite having agreed to continue negotiations at the U.S.-Iran nuclear talks held in Geneva on February 26, prior to the outbreak of war, the United States and Israel launched a preemptive strike. This constitutes nothing less than a despicable ambush" (Issuikai, 8 March 2026).
  • A former U.S. National Security Adviser. Jake Sullivan, on Jon Stewart's show, as captioned by RT: "Days before we started bombing Iran, they put a proposal on the table in Geneva," and the U.S. "didn't understand" it; Stewart: "Was it in FARSI?" (RT on X, 25 March 2026).
  • Oman, 27 February 2026. An analytical timeline circulating in June: "On the evening of 27 February 2026, even as Oman's foreign minister announced a 'breakthrough' - Iran reportedly agreeing never to stockpile enriched uranium, to accept full IAEA verification, and to irreversibly downgrade its 60% stock - Trump, aboard Air Force One, gave the order to proceed with Operation Epic Fury" (X search snippet, 10 June 2026).
  • A 2009 blueprint. The Brookings paper Which Path to Persia? described diplomacy as a step that, if refused, justifies force, and a chapter titled "Leave it to Bibi" in which "the United States would encourage—and perhaps even assist—the Israelis in conducting the strikes themselves" (as quoted by @Greg_the_Berean, 26 September 2026). One analyst wrote in 2026: "The papers described the options. The options are now being used. Surprise is only possible for those who never read them" (Angelo Giuliano, 1 September 2026).

The same pattern later

In September 2026 a critic of the war summarized: "We also bombed their negotiators while we were supposedly negotiating peace and had promised further diplomacy" (@OBrienClanMan, 21 September 2026). A Tehran-based professor, Mohammad Marandi, was described as saying the administration "used fake peace talks to secretly conspire with Netanyahu" (X search page, June 2026; no link to his remarks).

Why it matters to a parent

If diplomacy was near a deal, the war was a choice, not a necessity. A choice can be unmade by the people who vote. See Calls and Letters to Congress.
