The Four Shifting Reasons: Regime Change, the Bomb, Hormuz, and "Back to the Table"

A shadow that keeps changing shape is a sign that the object behind it is not what you are being told. Over seven months, the official reason for the Iran war changed at least four times.

One writer's count

Mohamad Safa, 19 July 2026 (about 12,400 views):

"What you were told on day one of the war? Regime change. Peace and freedom for the Iranians... That's lie number one. The entire justification for this war rotated ninety degrees... 'Iran is building a nuclear weapon'—that was the pitch. That was the lie number two... the third lie became that they are targeting Iran to undermine its ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz... As for the fourth lie... it is the claim that they are targeting bridges and power plants to force Iran back to the negotiating table! Yet, Iran was already at that table before the attack." — (X)

His conclusion: "The official reason for this war has already changed four times, and it keeps quietly rewriting itself... Each time the narrative shifts, the target list gets a little wider, and the war gets a little harder to end." Those are his characterizations.

The official words behind each reason

  1. Regime change. On 28 February the President told Iranians: "When we are finished, take over your government. It will be yours to take" (as printed by Grok, 21 September 2026). Grok compared it to Cheney's 2003 claim that Iraqis would welcome U.S. forces as liberators (Grok, 19 September 2026).
  2. The bomb. "If we didn't hit within two weeks, they would've had a nuclear weapon." See Weeks From a Bomb.
  3. Hormuz. On 2 March the stated goals were: "Destroy Iran's missiles. Annihilate their navy. Remove their support for terrorists like Hamas. Make sure they can never get a nuke" (X search snippet, 23 June 2026). On 12 April the Navy was ordered to begin "BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz" (Truth Social, as quoted by Clayton Wood).
  4. Pressure for a deal. On 7 April, per a British critic, the President threatened that "a whole civilization will die tonight" (@Bear_Faced, 30 April 2026); at the UN in September, per Al Jazeera, he threatened "to annihilate the country" (@rjtees1).

The score, by one account

"We came into this war with four big demands: end nuclear enrichment, stop supporting resistance groups, get rid of missiles and regime change. We have failed on all four counts. We have made the situation worse" (John Mearsheimer, as quoted on an X search page, 30 April 2026).

A war without a fixed reason has no fixed end. A war with no fixed end is the kind that needs a draft. See Is a Draft Coming?
